Peer reviewedRash, Agnes M. – Primus, 1998
Suggests an approach in courses for mathematics majors and minors similar to the popular approach used in applied courses--using student projects. Describes strategy and implementation of the projects and provides examples from student projects on statistics. (Author/ASK)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Mathematics Activities, Mathematics Education, Probability
Peer reviewedRobertson, Stephen; Walker, Stephen – Journal of Documentation, 2000
Discusses methods to be used in an adaptive filtering task, in which incoming documents are routed to users according to stored profiles. Highlights include decision thresholds to help in the retrieval decision; probability of relevance; calibration and logistic regression; feedback; and examples in the Okapi text retrieval system. (LRW)

Peer reviewedFombonne, Eric – Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice, 2002
A review of 32 epidemiological surveys of autism and pervasive developmental disorders found four surveys yielded estimates for childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD) ranging from 1.1 to 6.4 per 100,000. It is concluded that CDD is very rare and its prevalence is 60 times less than that of autistic disorder. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)
Descriptors: Autism, Children, Clinical Diagnosis, Disability Identification
Peer reviewedOsler, Thomas J. – Mathematics and Computer Education, 2001
Explains a non-standard definition of an ellipse familiar to astronomers and workers in celestial mechanics but which is not usually given in undergraduate text books on mathematics. (MM)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Geometric Concepts, Higher Education, Mathematics Activities
Peer reviewedPark, Hee Sun; Levine, Timothy R. – Communication Monographs, 2001
Extends the recent work on the veracity effect in deception detection. Explains the probabilistic nature of a receiver's accuracy in detecting deception and analyzes a receiver's detection of deception in terms of set theory and conditional probability. Finds that accuracy is shown to be a function of the relevant conditional probability and the…

Peer reviewedBrokaw, Alan J.; Merz, Thomas E. – Journal of Economic Education, 2004
The authors describe a game that students can play on the first day of a game theory class. The game introduces the 4 essential elements of any game and is designed so that its sequel, also played on the first day of class, has students playing the well-known Monty Hall game, which raises the question: Should you switch doors? By implementing a…

Peer reviewedLewandowski, Cathleen A.; Pierce, Lois – Social Work Research, 2004
This research assessed the effectiveness of a family-centered approach to out-of-home care in reunifying children with their families by comparing differential exit rates of children whose families received family-centered services with children whose families received routine child welfare services. The sample included 472 children who were in…

Mukhopadhyay, Sushanta; Mukherjee, R. N.; Chaudhuri, K. S. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2005
An inventory replenishment policy is developed for a deteriorating item and price-dependent demand. The rate of deterioration is taken to be time-proportional and the time to deterioration is assumed to follow a two-parameter Weibull distribution. A power law form of the price dependence of demand is considered. The model is solved analytically…

Peer reviewedCapraro, Mary Margaret; Kulm, Gerald; Capraro, Robert M. – School Science and Mathematics, 2005
A sample of 134 sixth-grade students who were using the Connected Mathematics curriculum were administered an open-ended item entitled, Vet Club (Balanced Assessment, 2000). This paper explores the role of misconceptions and naive conceptions in the acquisition of statistical thinking for middle grades students. Students exhibited misconceptions…

Klein, Joseph – Higher Education in Europe, 2004
In order to make effective decisions based on probability, one must be able to distinguish between the objective-factual aspects of the decision and the subjective aspects. This study examines the hypothesis that academic studies contribute to the development of the ability to make such distinctions in day-to-day decision-making. Some 940…

Moore, Rob – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 2004
This paper attempts to explicate and locate the concept of 'cultural capital' in terms of Pierre Bourdieu's more general theory of the forms of capital and their transubstantiations. It examines the manner in which the relationship between the economic field, and its relations of inequality and power, and the cultural field involves a process of…

Jansen, M. G. H.; Glas, C. A. W. – Psychometrika, 2005
Two new tests for a model for the response times on pure speed tests by Rasch (1960) are proposed. The model is based on the assumption that the test response times are approximately gamma distributed, with known index parameters and unknown rate parameters. The rate parameters are decomposed in a subject ability parameter and a test difficulty…

Muthen, Bengt; Masyn, Katherine – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2005
This article proposes a general latent variable approach to discrete-time survival analysis of nonrepeatable events such as onset of drug use. It is shown how the survival analysis can be formulated as a generalized latent class analysis of event history indicators. The latent class analysis can use covariates and can be combined with the joint…

Gustafsson, Lennart; Paplinski, Andrew – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2004
Autism is a developmental disorder with possibly multiple pathophysiologies. It has been theorized that cortical feature maps in individuals with autism are inadequate for forming abstract codes and representations. Cortical feature maps make it possible to classify stimuli, such as phonemes of speech, disregarding incidental detail. Hierarchies…

Hamilton, D.; Sutherland, G.; Iacono, T. – Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 2005
Background: It has been proposed that people with intellectual disability (ID) might be similar to the general population in the way they respond to significant life events. Some preliminary findings have demonstrated that adults with ID who have experienced recent life events have an increased probability of having psychiatric problems. The aims…
