The expense of a dial access information retrieval system (DIARS) is weighed against its benefits. Problems of usage and efficacy for the student are outlined. A fully automated system is proposed instead, and its cost-saving features are pointed out. (MS)

The inability of foreign language students to produce acceptable approximations of new vowel sounds initiated a study to devise a real-time visual display system whereby the students could match vowel production to a visual pedagogical model. The uses of a computer-based instructional system known as PLATO in teaching Russian, both in audio-lingual and reading-translation courses, at the University of Illinois are described. Examples of a variety of drills are given. An evaluation of the method is made. (RM)

The making of a minute, color videocassette tape on winemaking is described. The tape is bilingual with Spanish and English on separate audio tracks and is accompanied by a complete script. Pedagogical and production considerations in the making of the tape are discussed. (RM)

The findings from the application of audio-tutorial programing in three curriculum areas with three groups of exceptional children are reported. The findings suggest that audio-tutorial programing has qualities capable of meeting some of the instructional needs of exceptional children. (Author)
