Bennett, William A. – Linguistics, 1975
Clitics are explained through the interplay of different levels of language in performance. It is shown that clitic movement can be blocked on phonological ground, and accusative marked by "shwa" follows, rather than precedes, a clitic segment containing a back vowel--"vous le" or "nous le". (SCC)

Connolly, Patrick G. – English Language Teaching Journal, 1975
Teaching of modal auxiliaries without developing in students an understanding of the concepts and unity underlying their use may undermine the original objective of communication in language. The use of a classification matrix with a set of sample sentences is suggested as an effective method of presentation. (MSE)

Knowles, John – Language Sciences, 1975
This paper presents two types of Spanish sentences and contradicts theories which relate the two with identical deep structures. Criteria presented appear to show the two differ in deep structure and are related lexically rather than transformationally. (CK)

Birner, Betty J.; Ward, Gregory L. – 1989
The correlation of syntactic form with discourse function has become a central research area in linguistic pragmatics and discourse analysis. Most studies have proceeded on a construction-by-construction basis, failing to note significant generalizations across sentence types. One significant exception identifies a set presuppositional…

Warner, A. R. – 1989
Full verbs and auxiliaries are subject to gapping. In the simplest cases, this construction type involves apparent ellipsis within one or more clausal conjuncts under identity with the finite verb or auxiliary of a preceding conjunct. It has often been suggested that the apparent ellipsis must involve at least a verb. Some researchers see in the…
