Developing Empathy and Social Awareness in Children through Interactive Museum Programs
Elizabeth Leahey
Journal of Museum Education, v50 n2 p176-185 2025
This article offers a case study of "Small Acts, Big Impacts", an annual public program designed by education staff at Discovery Museum (Massachusetts, USA) to encourage children's development of empathy and social awareness. After observing unfortunate changes in visitor behavior, combined with the societal context of the global pandemic and intense political and social polarization, museum educators saw a need for programming that directly supported young visitors' community-minded identities. Through "Small Acts, Big Impacts", museum visitors engage in acts of direct service that ultimately benefit local nonprofits with whom the museum has partnered. As a result, visitors are made aware of unique and pressing needs within their communities and gain experience taking age-appropriate, meaningful steps toward social change.
