Nisbet, Janice; And Others – Journal of College Student Personnel, 1982
Considered the effectiveness of the Myers-Brigg Type Indicator, the Effective Study Test Results, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and high school class rank to predict success among high-risk college freshmen (N=658). Found the predictability of success reached the same level as that normally achieved for nonrisk students. (Author/RC)

Beady, Charles H., Jr.; Hansell, Stephen – American Educational Research Journal, 1981
Whether the race of elementary school teachers in black schools was associated with teachers' expectations for student achievement and perceptions of effort was investigated. Evidence suggested that teacher race was associated only with expectations for college success. (Author/GK)

Barak, Azy – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1981
Reviews relationships of vocational interests with vocational-relevant variables (ability, success, and satisfaction). Results indicate no correlations between interests and actual relevant abilities and performance, but that a positive relationship exists with satisfaction. Suggests cognitive functions may mediate between actual abilities,…

Miller, John W.; McKenna, Michael C. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Two groups of disabled readers, ages 8 and 11, were tested. Perceptual abilities related more strongly for younger students, while intelligence related more strongly for older students. Questions are raised about the validity of using expectancy formulae with younger disabled readers and the "learning disabilities" approach with older disabled…

Drew, David E.; Karpf, Ronald – Research in Higher Education, 1981
The history of evaluations of academic departments through peer review rankings and subsequent attempts to identify empirical correlates of the ratings are reviewed. Findings indicate that American Council on Education rankings can be predicted by the departmental rate of publication in highly cited journals. (Author/MLW)

Dworkin, Rosalind J.; Poindexter, Alfred N. – Youth and Society, 1980
Reviews literature on teenage abortion seekers. Suggests and tests a theoretical model designed to predict whether a low-income pregnant teenager will decide to abort or to deliver her baby. Concludes that age and socioemotional variables are the strongest predictive elements in the model. (GC)

Eaton, M. J. – Educational Review, 1979
Questionnaires administered to 190 children, ages 9-14, including persistent absentees, measured students' anxiety levels and relationships with parents, teachers, and peers. Academic-ability and parent-status data were gathered from school records. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine the predictive efficiency of these variables…

Pines, Sylvia F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
This study was designed to identify those females who are predicted to fall substantially below their male counterparts in mathematical participation and performance (female potential underachievers) and who are most in need of intervention procedures early in their college career. (Author/CE)

Ryff, Carol D. – Gerontologist, 1982
Examines earlier conceptualizations of successful aging and calls for a reformulation that is more responsive to developmental processes and theoretical guidance. Discusses issues of operational definitions, selective sampling, and stage theory. The perspective is illustrated with empirical research in the personality realm. (Author)

Slater, Dan; Elliott, William R. – Quarterly Journal of Speech, 1982
The value of "cultivation analysis" as a theoretical and analytic framework for investigating the effects of television has been questioned. This study suggests that of the viewing/reality variables, the most important is perceived law enforcement program realism, a variable generally excluded from cultivation analysis studies. (PD)

Seleen, Diane R. – Gerontologist, 1982
A significant amount of variation in life satisfaction beyond the demographic variables was found when 205 elderly persons were tested. Two life satisfaction measures were employed and compared. Results supported the use of a single-item inventory and suggested that satisfaction with time use contributes to life satisfaction. (Author/RC)

Barenbaum, Lester; Ricci, Raymond – College and University, 1982
An enrollment projection model designed and implemented at LaSalle College had five phases: establishing clear goals, model construction, model implementation, model estimation and validation, and using the forecast. The history of LaSalle's model and the elements in decision making are outlined. (MSE)

Taiwo, 'Diran – Science Education, 1981
Reports on a study to determine whether attitude scores of 120 preservice Nigerian science teachers, measured by the Science Student-Teacher Questionnaire, are significant predictors of practice teaching scores, measured by a student practice teaching evaluation form. Copies of both measures are included in an appendix. (DS)

Olsson, Ulf – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
The paper discusses the consequences for maximum likelihood factor analysis which may follow if the observed variables are ordinal with only a few scale steps. Results indicate that classification may lead to a substantial lack of fit of the model--an erroneous indication that more factors are needed. (Author/CTM)

Benz, Carolyn R.; And Others – American Educational Research Journal, 1981
The effect of the variables of student sex, grade level, and student achievement on teacher sex role expectations was assessed. Of the four variables, student achievement was a highly significant predictor. A negative relationship was found between the feminine sex role and high achievement. (Author/GK)
