Chandler, Arnold M. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1974
A group of six short ariticles explain 14 teacher-developed games and activities for classroom use. Many of the activities deal with interesting drill in basic operations and number concepts. The game of "Battleship" utilizes coordinates and several games are presented which stress strategies and logical reasoning. (LS)

Stein, Jane – MOSAIC, 1980
Summarizes experiments indicating that a basic key to learning is the development of concepts of pattern recognition and the appropriateness of using a particular theorem. (Author/SK)

Rocca, Carla; And Others – Francais dans le Monde, 1990
Four ideas for language classroom activities are presented, including a counting and calculation game, an exercise for developing familiarity with the parts and style of a newspaper article, an activity to help adolescents anticipating travel in a French city, and analysis of the textual structure of a current events circle. Blando, John A.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
Seventh-grade students were tested to uncover arithmetic errors. Answers and intermediate steps were analyzed and models to represent students' behavior were developed. Certain errors were common across students. Others were tied to the format of the test item. Some superficial understandings of mathematical concepts were exposed. (Author/DC)

Cramer, Kathleen A.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
This aptitude-treatment interaction study explored the relationship between cognitive restructuring ability and treatments varying in the amounts of teacher guidance on tasks with fractions. An interaction was found between cognitive restructuring ability and levels of teacher guidance for items having continuous perceptual distracters. (MNS)

Simon, Martin A.; Blume, Glendon W. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1994
A study of (n=26) prospective elementary teachers' understanding of the area of a rectangular region as a multiplicative relationship between the lengths of the sides resulted in the development of a description of the quantitative reasoning involved. (23 references) (MKR)

Wright, Bob – Australian Journal of Education, 1992
It is argued that Australian elementary mathematics curricula have been influenced by earlier British and United States educational movements and theories and are out of touch with current research emphasizing a constructivist approach. A new model of young children's numerical development is offered, and recommendations for improving mathematical…

Wright, Bob – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 1991
Kindergarten (n=30) and grade 1 (n=15) students of contrasting socioeconomic backgrounds were interviewed to assess their knowledge of number word sequences and spatial patterns and their ability to recognize numerals and use counting to establish numerosity of visible and screened collections. Findings indicate greater variation in abilities…
