This paper explores the view that poetry is a cognitive activity whose object of knowing is our affective life. It is argued that the devices used in poetry, being modifications of ordinary language, determine the sorts of things knowable. Students judged abortion statements on response scales which were evaluatively congruent or incongruent with subject attitude. Interaction among attitude, statement favorability, and congruency of the response scale suggests, that evaluative implications of the response language serve as a discriminitive cue leading to polarized judgments.
