Analysis of the communicative skills of a nine-year-old deaf boy with minimal schooling showed pantomiming and gestures to be his major mode of communication. Certain semantic patterns prevailed. Gibbs, Raymond W., Jr. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Discusses three experiments which investigated the role of convention and context in understanding indirect requests.
