Fagan, William T. – 1978
Designed to divide recall protocols for subsequent category analysis, this instrument equates surface syntactic forms with semantic ideas. The instrument defines two types of syntactic proposition--a base syntactic proposition, the simplest independent prediction (structurally) that may be used to convey information, and an alternate syntactic…

Peer reviewedRedfering, David L. – Journal of Negro Education, 1975
Results do not support the general concensus of earlier researchers that whites generally respond more favorably than blacks to counseling and psychotherapy. Study concludes that for the black females the long term effects of group counseling are substantially superior. (Author/AM)

Wetherick, N. E. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Short-term memory for single-syllable words is negatively related to the number of semantic categories from which the words are drawn. Test results are inconsistent with any theory postulating a separate short-term memory that takes no account of semantic factors. (CHK)

Peer reviewedCarter, Anne L. – Journal of Child Language, 1975
Through discussion and illustrative events, an evolving segment of communication is described during the course of transition of one child's total communication system from the sensorimotor or gestural level at 12 months into the level of use of the adult words "more" and "mine," and associated utterances, at 24 months. (Author/RM)

Descriptors: Form Classes (Languages), Grammar, Language Instruction, Linguistic Theory
Peer reviewedLake, J. Joseph – Slavic and East European Journal, 1975
It is asserted that certain points in Russian grammar can be adequately explained only with reference to sentence stress. Areas which lend themselves to explanation in terms of sentence stress are suggested, and directions given for developing drills. (Author/RM)

Peer reviewedMahoney, John; Nay, W. Robert – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1975
Change in adolescent female's perceptions of adolescent males was determined by pretesting three days prior to sexual integration of a residential school for delinquent females and posttesting two months after this event. Findings suggest that sexual integration of adolescent reform institutions is effective in avoiding sex-role diffusion. (GO)

A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis of Schizophrenics' and Normals' Perceptions of Verbal Similarity
Peer reviewedNeufeld, Richard W. J. – Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1975
Twenty-eight schizophrenics (14 paranoid and 14 nonparanoid) were compared with 14 normals on their judgments of similarity among words. The judgments were analyzed using an individual-differences multidimensional scaling procedure. (Editor)

Festgepraegte praedikative Konstruktionen im Deutschen (Idiomatic Predicate Constructions in German)
Reichstein, A. D. – Deutsch als Fremdsprache, 1974
Examines German idiomatic predicate constructions in various aspects; finds that these constructions do not form a homogeneous class, either as to form or as to syntax. Numerous examples, taken from dictionaries and other sources, are used. (Text is in German.) (IFS/WGA)

Peer reviewedPasicki, Adam – Studia Anglica Posnaniensia, 1972
A set of rules is given generating those temporal clauses in English whose sources are sentences embedded in the adverbial position by means of relativization. See FL 508 197 for availability. (Author/RM)

Peer reviewedGussmann, Edmund – Studia Anglica Posnaniensia, 1973
It is asserted that the treatment of intonation within the framework of generative grammar has not shown whether surface syntactic structure is sufficient for formulation of phonological rules. An attempt is made to demonstrate that within English phonology reference to deep structure is necessary. (Available from: See FL 508 214). (RM)

Peer reviewedZabrocki, Tadeusz – Studia Anglica Posnaniensia, 1973
A deep structure underlying sentences with modal adverbs and verbs in English is discussed. Semantic and syntactic similarities are pointed out in support of a suggestion that both surface structures have a common deep structure source. Possible ways of dealing with modality in a generative grammar are presented. (Available from: See FL 508 214.)…
