Marcell, Michael M.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1988
The study of Down Syndrome (N=16), other mentally retarded, and non retarded subjects (all matched for mental age) found that Down Syndrome subjects showed significantly poorer recall of auditorially presented stimuli than the other two groups (which did not differ). (Author/DB)

Keller, Timothy, A.; Cowan, Nelson – Developmental Psychology, 1994
Examined developmental change in the duration of memory for tone pitch in children and adults. In experiment 1, performance on a two-tone comparison task deteriorated across the intertone interval more quickly in younger than in older subjects. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the developmental difference in pitch memory persistence is unlikely to…

Uttal, David; And Others – Child Development, 1995
Toddlers were asked to find a hidden toy based on one hidden in a scale model of the room, after varying periods of delay. Subjects experiencing a longer delay on the first trial performed more poorly than those experiencing the long delay later in the trials. Results indicate the difficulty for children of keeping a symbol-referent relation in…

Diamond, Adele – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1995
Tested the recognition memory of 4-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month-old infants using visual paired comparison tasks. Found that at even the youngest age that reaching was tested (6 months), infants showed evidence of recognition memory on the reaching task at delays at least as long as those at which they demonstrated recognition memory on the looking…

Wadsworth, Sally J.; And Others – Intelligence, 1995
The genetic and environmental causes of the phenotypic association between reading and verbal short-term memory (VSTM) were analyzed using data from the Colorado Reading Project for 446 twin pairs. Results of bivariate behavioral genetic analyses indicate that both reading ability and VSTM are highly heritable. (SLD)

Raine, Adrian; And Others – Child Development, 1991
Children with speech disorders had lower short-term memory capacity and smaller word length effect than control children. Children with speech disorders also had reduced speech-motor activity during rehearsal. Results suggest that speech rate may be a causal determinant of verbal short-term memory capacity. (BC)

John, Kirk R. – Psychology in the Schools, 1998
Three standardized measures of short-term memory (STM) were compared to determine their relative efficacy in predicting reading achievement for 36 primary-grade students over a two-year period. A letter sequences test was found to be the most frequently associated with reading performance. A memory-for-sentences task also showed a significant…

Henry, Lucy A.; Gudjonsson, Gisli H. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1999
A study compared how well 31 children (ages 11-12) with mental retardation, 19 age-matched (CA) children, and 21 mental-age (MA) matched children were able to recall a staged event one day later. Children with mental retardation were more suggestible in response to closed misleading questions than were CA children. (Contains references.)…

Ozonoff, Sally; Strayer, David L. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2001
This study compared working memory in 28 high-functioning autistic individuals (ages 7-18) with that of 30 individuals with Tourette Syndrome or typically developing. No group differences were found. Performance was significantly correlated only with age and IQ. Results suggest that working memory is not an executive function seriously impaired in…

Unsworth, Nash; Engle, Randall W. – Journal of Memory and Language, 2006
Complex (working memory) span tasks have generally shown larger and more consistent correlations with higher-order cognition than have simple (or short-term memory) span tasks. The relation between verbal complex and simple verbal span tasks to fluid abilities as a function of list-length was examined. The results suggest that the simple…

Cain, Kate; Oakhill, Jane; Lemmon, Kate – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2004
Two studies investigated the ability to use contextual information in stories to infer the meanings of novel vocabulary by 9-10-year-olds with good and poor reading comprehension. Across studies, children with poor reading comprehension were impaired when the processing demands of the task were greatest. In Study 2, working memory capacity was…

Baudouin, Alexia; Vanneste, Sandrine; Pouthas, Viviane; Isingrini, Michel – Brain and Cognition, 2006
The aim of the present research was to study age-related changes in duration reproduction by differentiating the working memory processes underlying this time estimation task. We compared performances of young and elderly adults in a duration reproduction task performed in simple and concurrent task conditions. Participants were also administered…

Kerzel, Dirk; Ziegler, Nathalie E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2005
Visual short-term memory (VSTM) was probed while observers performed smooth pursuit eye movements. Smooth pursuit keeps a moving object stabilized in the fovea. VSTM capacity for position was reduced during smooth pursuit compared with a condition with eye fixation. There was no difference between a condition in which the items were approximately…

Norris, Dennis; Baddeley, Alan D.; Page, Michael P. A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2004
The authors report 5 serial-recall experiments. In 4 of the 5 experiments, they show that irrelevant sound (IS) has a retroactive effect on material already in memory. In Experiment 1, IS presented during a filled retention interval had a reliable effect on list recall. Four further experiments, 3 of which used retroactive IS, showed that IS…

Klauer, Karl Christoph; Zhao, Zengmei – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2004
A visual short-term memory task was more strongly disrupted by visual than spatial interference, and a spatial memory task was simultaneously more strongly disrupted by spatial than visual interference. This double dissociation supports a fractionation of visuospatial short-term memory into separate visual and spatial components. In 6 experiments,…
