A discussion of three possible formats of a bilingual education program: early total immersion, early partial immersion and late partial immersion. A report on an experiment testing the hypothesis that reading comprehension in a foreign language is learned more quickly and improved if reading instruction follows instruction and practice in listening comprehension. Validates an instrument for measuring non-natives' English-speaking proficiency, using Filipinos in the U.S. Navy. Shows significant correlations between test scores, the age at which English was first spoken, and military rank, suggesting an interaction between English-speaking proficiency and occupational advancement. Predictions were derived from the assumption that the vocabulary store underlying the auditory analysis of verbal stimuli is organized as an acoustic space rather than as a lexicon (tree) or collection.
