Age at Arrival and Gender Differences in Immigrant Parents' Educational Aspirations and Engagement
British Journal of Sociology of Education, v46 n5 p610-630 2025
This study examines how U.S. immigrant parents' gender and age at arrival influence their parenting practices. Drawing on life course theory and classical assimilation theory, this research argues that these factors shape distinct experiences for immigrant parents, ultimately affecting their attitudes toward their children's education. Using High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, the analysis reveals that the effect of parents' age at immigration on parenting practices differs by gender. Immigrant mothers who arrived in the U.S. at a later age exhibit higher educational aspirations for their children than native-born mothers. However, no significant differences are found between immigrant and native-born fathers in this regard. In terms of parental engagement, immigrant fathers who arrived during adolescence show lower levels of involvement in their children's school activities and homework assistance compared to U.S.-born fathers. However, no such differences are observed between immigrant mothers and U.S.-born mothers, regardless of age at arrival.
