Cunningham, Donald J. – 1972
An experiment designed to test the generality of Paivio's two factor theory of meaning to sentence comprehension was carried out, and two scoring procedures were investigated: a verbatim score in which sentence elements had to be recalled exactly as they appeared in the original, and a substance score in which synonyms were accepted. The subjects…

Schallert, Diane Lemonnier – 1975
This study attempted to elucidate the effects of context and level of processing on comprehension and memory for prose. Two aspects of memory for prose were investigated: the amount of information remembered and the semantic interpretation assigned to ambiguous paragraphs. Task instructions and exposure duration of the passages were manipulated to…

Gounard, Beverley Roberts
Forty-eight grade-three children and 48 grade-eight children were presented respectively with six- and eight-letter sequences for written free recall. The older children, as had adult subjects in previous studies, showed a greater tendency to recall serially with a four-letters-per-second presentation rate than with a half- or…

Peer reviewedSpring, Carl – Journal of Special Education, 1976
Evaluated with 14 dyslexic and 14 normal boys (all 6-12 years old) was the relationship between slow speech-motor encoding to the transfer of information from short-term to long-term memory. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Exceptional Child Research
Kadesh, Irving; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
A study is reported in which pairs of synonyms, antonyms, coordinates, and super super-subordinates were presented dichotically to university students. After each pair the subject reported what he heard. In one condition the two members of a pair were presented simultaneously, and in another they were presented sequentially. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Associative Learning, Auditory Perception, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing
Moeser, Shannon Dawn – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Experiments are reported in which semantically interrelating sentences were presented to subjects as discrete items, and inference tests were given to measure the degree to which the similar information had been stored in the same memory system. Results suggest that verbal information is sometimes encoded into an episodic system. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Cognitive Processes, Elementary School Students, Language Processing
Peer reviewedSchwartz, Steven; Wiedel, Timothy C. – Intelligence, 1978
The relation between individual differences in verbal ability and memory for order was investigated. Results indicated that (1) order and item information may be retained separately; (2) verbal ability is related to short-term recall but not recognition of order; and (3) transformation of order at output increases the relation. (Author/RD)

Peer reviewedKail, Robert V., Jr.; Marshall, Christine Vereb – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
Four experiments investigated memory scanning rates of skilled and less skilled readers. In three experiments, reaction times of skilled readers were faster than those of less skilled readers with reading time partialled out (aloud and silent reading). Differences were not significant when the scan component in answering was minimized. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Learning Processes, Memory, Reaction Time
Peer reviewedHarkness, John E. – Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 1978
Discussed are the promotion of long-term information retention and transfer through the modification of prose text with opportunities for practice and reinforcement, provisions to reduce forgetting, and simulation of realistic events. Learning principles, relevant reviews of literature, and applications of the principles are presented. (JMD)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Learning Theories, Literature Reviews, Memory
Peer reviewedLandry, Rodrigue J. – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1978
Recent research is reviewed demonstrating positive effects of bilingualism on cognitive development, some explanation of this research are given, and an interpretation is offered bearing on the variability of memory codes in bilinguals. Results of a study dealing with memory codes are presented and discussed. (Text is in French.) (AMH)

Peer reviewedWagner, Daniel A. – Cognitive Psychology, 1978
The relationships of structural features of memory (e.g., short-term store) and of control processes in memory (e.g., verbal rehearsal) were compared according to age, rural-urban differences, and amount of education. Culturally-specific skills were also investigated in Moroccan rug sellers and Koranic students, and in American college students.…

Peer reviewedElliott, Colin – British Journal of Psychology, 1978
The time taken to name 56 drawings of objects on five separate occasions were analyzed for 21 ESN(M) children (i.e., moderately educationally subnormal) and 21 ESN(S) children (i.e., severely educationally subnormal), matched for picture-naming vocabulary. Results were discussed in terms of the Oldfield (1964) and Lachman (1973) models of lexical…

Peer reviewedBarrett, Terry R.; And Others – American Journal of Psychology, 1978
Barrett, Maier, Ekstrand, and Pellegrino in 1975 reported relatively large drops in performance from the criterion trial to an immediate retention test using a study-test free-recall paradigm. The present experiment was designed to determine whether this criterion fall was associated with the use of a retrieval strategy involving short-term…

Peer reviewedPichert, James W.; Anderson, Richard C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1977
College undergraduates read stories from one of two directed perspectives or no directed perspective. An idea's significance in terms of the assigned perspective affected both initial learning and recall one week later. Schemata, or conceptual frameworks, were assumed to aid in memory and retrieval. (Author/GDC)
