Three strategies for controlling concentration during academic tasks were evaluated: (1) self-initiated relaxation; (2) self-coaching; and (3) a combination of the first two types. Results indicated that the third strategy, significantly facilitated some aspects of academic performance. (Author/GK)

Loke, Wing Hong – Psychology: A Journal of Human Behavior, 1988
Surveyed 542 undergraduates concerning their caffeine consumption. Found that subjects consumed less caffeine than average caffeine-drinking population. Coffee was main beverage used. Subjects reported drinking more caffeine when preparing for examinations. Suggests that caffeine may have some beneficial effects on learning. (Author/NB)

Scores of 132 accounting, secretarial, and data processing students on the Study Habits Inventory revealed numerous study skill strengths and few weaknesses and significant differences between upper and lower quartile students. Inappropriate study behavior on 39% of the items indicates room for some improvement. (SK)
