Peer reviewedLarson, Jerry W. – Modern Language Journal, 1983
Examines whether significantly high correlations exist among language skills in second year students as measured by their final exams. Results support previous research suggesting the existence of shared language aspects across skills. However, each language skill appears to retain enough unique variance that the score in one skill cannot…

Peer reviewedOmizo, Michael M.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Construct validity data found some support for the California Occupational Preference System constructs when its results were evaluated on a sample of 213 female undergraduates relative to the Vocational Preference Inventory results. (PN)
Descriptors: College Students, Correlation, Females, Higher Education
Peer reviewedStewart, Michael J.; Blair, William O. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Raters' agreement and the relative consistency of diving judges at a boy's competition were analyzed using intraclass correlations within 16 position x type combinations. Judges' variance was significant for 5 of the 16 combinations. Point estimates were generally greater for consistency than for raters' agreement about scores. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Competitive Selection, Correlation, Decision Making
Peer reviewedLazarus, Philip J. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Ninety-eight children identified as shy, based on their self-perceptions and specific criteria related to shyness, were administered a self-esteem inventory and self-report measures of shyness. A significant correlation between shyness and self-esteem scores indicated that shyness is related to low self-esteem. (Author/CM)

Peer reviewedKarnes, Frances A.; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
The correlations between the scores on the 1966, 1973, and 1979 norms on Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices for 140 economically disadvantaged students in grades three and five were significantly high. It seems appropriate to use any of the three sets of norms with economically disadvantaged students. (Author)

Peer reviewedDevine, Patrick J.; Raju, Nambury S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Four methods of item bias detection--transformed item difficulty, item discrimination expressed as Clemans' lambda, chi-square, and the three-parameter item characteristic curve--were studied to determine the degree of correspondence among them in identifying biased and unbiased items in reading and mathematics subtests of the 1978 SRA Achievement…

Peer reviewedSwanson, Beverly – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The scores of a sample of 116 first-grade rural Georgia pupils from a reading attitude inventory were correlated .18 with the reading composite scores on the Metropolitan Achievement Test. Coefficients of .48 and .32 were found for females and blacks respectively. The low degree of correspondences limited practical significance. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Attitude Measures, Correlation, Primary Education
Peer reviewedScott, Richard R.; McPartland, James M. – American Educational Research Journal, 1982
To appropriately evaluate the effects of the national policy of desegregation on racial attitudes, data from a national probability sample of 9-, 13-, and 17-year-olds were analyzed. The analysis indicates that, for both Whites and Blacks, desegregation is related positively to racial tolerance. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Correlation, Desegregation Effects, Educational Policy, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedMorgan, Michael – Human Communication Research, 1983
Examines the relationship between victimization of characters in television drama and susceptibility to the viewers' cultivation of a sense of personal risk in the real world. Found that viewers whose fictional counterparts are more likely to be shown as victims show stronger associations between viewing and perceived vulnerability. (PD)
Descriptors: Audiences, Correlation, Demography, Fear
Peer reviewedWinne, Philip H.; Belfry, M. Joan – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1982
This review of issues about correcting for attenuation concludes that the basic difficulty lies in being able to identify and equate sources of variance in estimates of validity and reliability. Recommendations are proposed for cautious use of correction for attenuation. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Correlation, Error of Measurement, Research Methodology, Statistical Analysis
Peer reviewedSimpson, Robert G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The usefulness of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test General Information subtest as a general screening instrument with non-retarded subjects is shown in a study of concurrent validity between the subtest and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Correlations between the instruments in two intelligence groups are discussed.…

Peer reviewedDeMers, Stephen T.; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
This study compared the performance of school-aged children referred for learning or adjustment difficulties on Beery's Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration and Koppitz's version of the Bender-Gestalt test. Results indicated that the tests are related but not equivalent when administered to referred populations. (Author/AL)
Descriptors: Children, Comparative Analysis, Correlation, Learning Problems
Peer reviewedMoffitt, Paul F.; Eisen, Peter – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1982
Found a significant positive correlation between wives' (but not husbands') neuroticism scores and the degree to which the couple is apart on Lanyon's extraversion-introversion scale. Further correlations suggest fewer intimate communications and agreements between highly diverging couples. Theorized that this constellation of factors leads to…
Descriptors: Congruence (Psychology), Correlation, Females, Foreign Countries
Linn, Robert L.; Dunbar, Stephen B. – Journal of College Student Personnel, 1982
Presents the drastic effects that selection on several variables can sometimes have on the validity of predictor variables. Discusses practical implications of correcting correlations for selection effects and reporting results of validity studies. (Author)
Descriptors: Admission (School), Admission Criteria, College Students, Correlation
Peer reviewedStam, Henderikus J.; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
In an attempt to replicate the finds of Sackeim, Paulhus, and Weiman (1979), three classrooms of college students were tested for hypnotic susceptibility, handedness, and seating preferences. No relationships between variables were found for males. For females, relationships were inconsistent. Relationships between hypnotic susceptibility and…
