Allen, Nancy L.; Dunbar, Stephen B. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
The standard error (SE) of correlations adjusted for selection with commonly used formulas was investigated. The study provides large-sample approximations of SE using the Pearson-Lawley three-variable correction formula, examines the SE under specific conditions, and compares various estimates of SEs under direct and indirect selection. (TJH)

Bedrick, Edward J. – Psychometrika, 1990
Asymptotic distributions of H. Brogden's and F. Lord's modified sample biserial correlation coefficients (SBCCs) are derived. Asymptotic variances of these estimators are evaluated for bivariate normal populations and compared to the maximum likelihood estimator's asymptotic variance. These estimators are less variable than ordinary SBCCs when the…

Paisley, William – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1990
Discussion of researchers in the multidisciplinary field of communications focuses on a study using the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) that investigated cocitation frequencies of selected communication researchers and often-cited researchers in related fields. A factor analysis of correlations based on cocitation frequencies is among the…

Wisniewski, Wieslaw – Comparative Education, 1990
Reports findings of two surveys of a total of 657 Polish secondary teachers. Examines degree of job satisfaction and its relationship to teaching conditions, teacher role, and educational environment. Discusses the effect of a 60 percent teacher pay raise that was granted between the 2 surveys. (SV)

Fouladi, Rachel T.; Steiger, James H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
The test proposed by Brien, Venables, and Mayo (1984), endorsed by Silver and Dunlap, and supported by computer software that they developed is not a proper test for multivariate independence. A revised appraisal is suggested for the Silver and Dunlap results. (SLD)

Luk, Suet Ching – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1998
Two studies were conducted on the relationship between field dependence and academic learning in the context of distance learning; subjects were undergraduate nursing students in Hong Kong. In both studies, field independent nurses performed significantly better than field dependent ones, as indicated by a positive correlation between academic…

Paclawskyj, Theodosia R.; Matson, Johnny L.; Bamburg, Jerald W.; Baglio, Christopher S. – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1997
A study of 233 individuals with severe mental retardation examined the validity of the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped-II (DASH-II) through correlation with the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). DASH-II as a whole was found to have a high degree of convergent validity with the ABC total score. (CR)

Kravetz, Shlomo; Faust, Miriam; Lipshitz, Shahar; Shalhav, Shlomo – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1999
Forty-four fourth- and fifth-grade boys with and without learning disabilities (LD) completed a semi-structured interview measure of interpersonal understanding. They were also rated by their teachers on social adaptation in the classroom. Interpersonal understanding and social adaptation were positively correlated, and children with LD exhibited…

Beishuizen, Jos; van der Schalk, Janine; Le Grand, Julie – Learning and Instruction, 1999
The causal network model of P. Van den Broeck and T. Trabasso (1986) was used to analyze the inferencing processes induced from verbal protocols from reading and thinking-aloud tasks. Results from 66 Dutch 10- and 11-year olds show no correlation between reading and think-aloud performance and comprehensive scores of a closed comprehension test.…

Chen, Yau-Jane; Willits, Fern K. – American Journal of Distance Education, 1999
Discussion of educational transactions in distance-learning environments focuses on a study that identified the dimensions constituting dialog, structure, and learner autonomy by investigating Pennsylvania State University students' experiences with videoconferencing. Results of exploratory factor analysis and interfactor correlation coefficients…

Furnham, Adrian; Dewaele, Jean-Marc – Language Learning, 1999
Focuses on one particular psychological dimension, extraversion-introversion. The relatively small number of linguistic studies in which extraversion is focused on as an independent variable suggests that applied linguists believe it unrelated to speech production or language learning. Argues that this suspicion is based on a misunderstanding…

Turner, G. Marc; Sweany, Noelle Wall; Husman, Jenefer – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2000
Discussion of computer literacy and the rapidly changing face of technology focuses on a study that redefined computer literacy to include competencies for using graphical user interfaces for operating systems, hypermedia applications, and the Internet. Describes the development and testing of the Computer Interface Literacy Measure with…

Bracey, Gerald W. – Phi Delta Kappan, 1998
Given only correlation coefficient, one cannot infer causality. This lesson has been lost on Secretary of Education Richard Riley, who recently intoned that "taking rigorous mathematics courses ... early in secondary schools is a gateway to college and future employment." Students taking such classes have probably already been identified…
