A variety of algorithms for analyzing covariance structures are considered. Additionally, two methods of estimation, maximum likelihood, and weighted least squares are considered. Comparisons are made between these algorithms and factor analysis. (Author/JKS)

Evidence is presented for (1) operationally distinguishing between divergent thinking (DT) and IQ, and between verbal DT and non-verbal DT, among subjects representing the full normal ability range, and (2) decrease of DT/IQ correlations with increasing age and among elementary and secondary school girls. The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, Gordon Personal Profile, and Gordon Personal Inventory were administered to 151 male and female high school students. Normal and neurologically handicapped six year olds were administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test--Form A, the Riley Preschool Developmental Screening Inventory-Designs, the Riley Make-a-Boy, and the McCarthy Scales of Children's Ability Designs. A Monte Carlo simulation was employed to determine the accuracy with which the shrinkage in R squared can be estimated by five different shrinkage formulas. Analysis of correlations between Verbal and Full Scale IQ scores for 231 high-IQ psychiatric outpatients indicated that Verbal IQ appears partially valid as a WAIS short form for this higher IQ group. Examination of 40 randomly selected high schools in Montana re: the effect of transportation time and school size on student academic achievement revealed that the time spent on buses did not have a negative effect on learning but that the size of school did seem to have an effect. (JC)
