Joreskog, Karl G.; Goldberger, Arthur S. – 1971
Aitkin's generalized least squares (GLS) principle, with the inverse of the observed variance-covariance matrix as a weight matrix, is applied to estimate the factor analysis model in the exploratory (unrestricted) case. It is shown that the GLS estimates are scale free and asymptotically efficient. The estimates are computed by a rapidly…

Lisman, Linda C. – 1971
Fifty-seven seventh and 60 eighth graders were divided into three reading ability groups. All were given the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) prior to the study and the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test Survey E for grades 7 to 9 immediately after the study. A practice sample was given before the tests on prepared vowel deletion and…

Breen, Myles P.; Powell, Jon T. – 1973
A statistical analysis of the effect of television commercials on children, this study found that children both like and believe television commercials. Middle Western children from grades two through five rated four videotaped TV commercials, selected at random, on a scale of true/false, happy/not happy, real/not real, stupid/smart, nice/not…

Morris, Carl; Rolph, John – 1971
This document consists of unrevised lecture notes for the first half of a 20-week in-house graduate course at Rand Corporation. The chapter headings are: (1) Histograms and descriptive statistics; (2) Measures of dispersion, distance and goodness of fit; (3) Using JOSS for data analysis; (4) Binomial distribution and normal approximation; (5)…

Carroll, John B. – 1971
The subjective magnitude estimation (SME) procedure was used to obtain estimates of relative word frequency from two adult groups (15 lexicographers, 13 other adults) for 60 words ranging widely in objective frequency. Lexicographers rendered more reliable estimates, and their averaged data correlated more highly with objective log frequency than…

Lazar, Alfred L.; Ernandes, Carol – 1972
A correlational analysis was conducted between scores obtained on the Is of Identity Test (IOI) and the Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale (ATDP) by 105 graduate and undergraduate university students enrolled in an introductory special education course. The IOI is a 100 item scale designed to measure social adjustment, while the ATDP measures…

Blai, Boris, Jr. – 1971
Statistics are an essential tool for making proper judgement decisions. It is concerned with probability distribution models, testing of hypotheses, significance tests and other means of determining the correctness of deductions and the most likely outcome of decisions. Measures of central tendency include the mean, median and mode. A second…

Madson, Gerald Gerhart – 1972
Recent years have seen many attempts to program learning based on many principles ranging from intuition to mathematics. The area of criterion establishment for advancement or conversely additional training at the same or lower levels remains primarily in the realm of intuition. The intuition used is only as good as the experience and background…

Angoff, William H.; Stern, June – 1971
This study examines a common set of equating items for their appropriateness to both American and Canadian populations and, to determine the equations for converting scores from the verbal and mathematical scales of the 1971 form of the Canadian Scholastic Aptitude Test (the future standard continuing scales of the CSAT) to the corresponding…

CORLE, CLYDE G.; COULTER, MYRON L. – 1964
AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE TO DETERMINE WHETHER STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED SPECIFIC ASSISTANCE WITH READING SKILLS IN ARITHMETIC SHOWED SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN THEIR READING AND ARITHMETIC WHEN COMPARED WITH A SIMILAR GROUP WHO DID NOT RECEIVE SUCH ASSISTANCE. FIFTEEN SCHOOLS WERE SELECTED FROM APPROXIMATELY 70 MEMBER SCHOOL DISTRICTS OF THE…

Gange, J. J.; And Others – 1976
In an extension of an earlier study by Cline, Croft, and Courrier (1973) the effects of amount of television viewing and preference for televised violence upon autonomic responses to violent and nonviolent videotaped movie sequences were examined. Thirty-six male undergraduates watched a six-minute portion of a boxing film and a six-minute portion…

Ogden, William R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
Summarizes findings of 24 studies in which attempts were made to correlate achievement in college chemistry to many variables. A list of the most promising factors is provided. However, the author found no conclusive predictors in reviewing the research. (CP)

Joesting, Joan; Joesting, Robert – College Student Journal, 1975
Community college students took a variety of personality and sex attitude questionnaires. Results suggest that students in a conservative area who favor liberal sex roles tend to be loners, having a low opinion of themselves and others. They are outspoken, ambitious, and are quick to challenge the laws of society. (Author)

Knapp, Lila; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
Comparative validity data for the Career Ability Placement Survey and the General Aptitude Test Battery relative to predicting course marks are presented for a sample of ninth grade students. The pattern of correlations between school grades and conceptually similar tests in the two measures was highly similar. (Author/JKS)

Batlis, Nick C. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
A job involvement measure was altered to reflect academic involvement and was employed as a predictor of academic performance. Contrary to the findings of prior industrial research, involvement was found to be correlated neither with age nor with course satisfaction; however, it did prove an efficacious predictor of course grade.
