The study addressed the question, "Did students within some areas of concentration in business outperform students in other areas of concentration in lower-division economics courses?" Results indicate the answer is "yes" and that the best performance comes from students in (1) accounting, (2) finance, and (3) management information systems. (CH)

The number of U.S. seniors who enrolled in the National Resident Matching Program in 1986 decreased. The most competitive programs were in emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedic surgery, and diagnostic radiology. A study of 98 medical students' career choice and career change decisions, and the point in the medical curriculum at which they were made, is reported. Negative factors concerning the initial career choice accounted for 84 percent of the changes, and positive aspects of the new choice caused 16 percent. (MSE)

Records of 63 medical school graduates were examined for predictors of achievement on in-training examinations in anesthesia and orthopedic surgery. The previous academic records were found to contain little to predict examination results, and the correlation between college nonscience subjects and exam performance was negative. (Author/MSE)

A study of the effects of the gender composition of U.S. medical school classes on the specialty choices of graduates during 1970-76, the period of greatest growth in female medical school enrollment, shows only weak statistical effects. The variation in specialty choice patterns across schools suggests a need for further investigation. (MSE)
