Counselor's Experience in Helping Adolescence with Social Anxiety: Predicting the Effectiveness of Self-Help Digital Bibliotherapy
International Society for Technology, Education, and Science, Paper presented at the International Conference on Research in Education and Science (ICRES) (Antalya, Turkey, Apr 27-30, 2024)
Social anxiety is common in adolescents and often persists into adulthood. Many previous studies have addressed this issue and its interventions in a general psychological context, but not much has focused on the educational sphere. This study aims to explore counsellor strategies for overcoming social anxiety in adolescents and to analyze whether digital self-help bibliotherapy can be an appropriate strategy for overcoming social anxiety in adolescents. The online survey method was conducted on school counsellors (N= 215). The results showed that school counsellors found many students experienced social anxiety, mostly caused by bullying behaviour, socioeconomic conditions, and difficulties in adapting. Counselling strategies to overcome social anxiety include relaxation, humour, self-talk, bibliocounseling and psychoeducation. Further discussions were held regarding the possibility of using self-help digital bibliocounseling. This research has implications for developing effective interventions to help adolescents with social anxiety. The results of this study can be used to increase understanding of the counsellor's role in providing psychological assistance through digital technology.
