Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v118 n9 p684-691 2025
Financial literacy is essential for individuals to navigate the complexities of modern society. In 2021, financial literacy was introduced as a new strand in Ontario's Grade 9 mathematics curriculum, which aims to address educational barriers for historically marginalized groups, such as Black students (Ontario Newsroom, 2021). This article presents a lesson developed in partnership with a Black-serving community organization in Ontario, based on an out-of-school program. Thirteen Black-identifying youth participated in a full-day activity consisting of two 90-minute sessions designed to explore budgets at personal and systemic levels. The lesson integrates social issues into financial literacy education. The project was developed and led by a diverse research team including members of the Black, Caribbean, and African diaspora. This article encourages readers to reflect on how their personal experiences shape their understanding of financial literacy and consider the impact of sociopolitical factors such as race, immigration status, and class. The lesson plan is divided into two 90-minute sessions and can be adapted to meet the diverse needs of different student groups.
