Not so Different: Academic Librarians and the Art of Faculty Development
Karen Sobel
Journal of Faculty Development, v40 n1 p58-60 2026
Academic librarians, particularly those with instructional roles, are well-positioned to transition into faculty development. This article explores how librarians' teaching experiences, collaborative mindsets, and campuswide connections align with competencies for faculty development roles. It highlights librarians' relevant skills in areas such as mentoring, strategic planning, and communication. The article also emphasizes librarians' longitudinal perspective on student success and their inclination toward collaboration and growth. In addition, the article provides practical suggestions for academic librarians who wish to become involved with faculty development and offers shared guidance for current faculty developers who are interested in bringing librarians into their work.
