Discusses the selection of reviewers and books for review by "Library Journal" and "Choice." An analysis of 1,300 reviews from each journal concludes that key decisions are made by editors rather than reviewers and that the reviews were relatively uncritical whether signed or unsigned, or by college teachers or librarians. The absence of replication studies and negative results in psychological journals, provoked a survey of 14 journal editors asked to tabulate submission rates; accepted/rejected rates; and of these, replication papers and papers with negative and positive results. Finds (1) endorsements occurred in about half of the advertisements; (2) endorsers most used were celebrities; (3) advertisements with endorsers contain less information; and (4) celebrities most often endorsed personal care or apparel products.
