A report of a survey to determine the current state of point-of-use library instruction--any presentation that informs the patron about the use of a particular reference/research tool--in 133 U.S. and Canadian academic libraries is presented. (Author/MBR)

A patron questionnaire was used to collect data on why materials were not found. Reasons cited included inadequacy of user catalog skills, reluctance to ask for help, not always receiving help upon requesting it, and needed materials were frequently checked out.
