Yasuhiro, Yusuke; Ishimura, Masachika; Kinugawa, Tohru – Physics Education, 2020
We have added two improvements to a self-luminous LED stroboscope (a flashing point-like projectile developed for introductory mechanics): downsizing by replacing heavy and risky batteries with a compact and safe capacitor of several Farads (a so-called Super-C) and wireless control via ordinary IR (infrared) communications. Consequently, the…

Volfson, Alexander; Eshach, Haim; Ben-Abu, Yuval – Physical Review Physics Education Research, 2020
Circular motion is embedded in many circus tricks, and is also one of the most challenging topics for both students and teachers. Previous studies have identified several misconceptions about circular motion, and especially about the forces that act upon a rotating object. A commonly used demonstration of circular motion laws by physics teachers…

Brates, Danielle; Steele, Catriona M.; Molfenter, Sonja M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2020
Purpose: A method for controlling for sex-based differences in measures of hyoid movement using an internal anatomical scalar has been validated in young healthy individuals. Known anatomical changes with aging necessitate validation of this methodology in a mixed-age sample. The primary aim of this study was to validate a method for controlling…

Ladino, L. A. – Physics Education, 2020
In this work we study the motion of a small metal ball along an inclined multi-slotted track. Specifically, the effect of the slot width on the ball speed at the lower part of the track is analyzed in detailed both analytically and experimentally. Experimental results are in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical model.

Gomes, Mário S. M. N. F.; da Silva, Pedro Pereira; Silva, Manuela Ramos; Martín-Ramos, Pablo – Physics Teacher, 2020
This paper describes an experiment with two touching rotating disks, whose movement is followed by video analysis. Within the disks' movements, there are intervals with sliding and intervals without sliding, that is, intervals with frictional forces between the touching surfaces and intervals without it. This system configuration allows for…

Didis Körhasan, Nilüfer – Journal of Turkish Science Education, 2021
As well as knowledge structures can be complex and coherent, they might be small and disconnected. This study focuses on knowledge elements of pre-service teachers using diSessa's phenomenological primitives (p-prims) framework. Based on group interviews, a test was developed regarding the knowledge fragments used for explaining free fall in three…

Hong, Seong Bock; Broderick, Jane Tingle; McAuliffe, Cynthia M. – Early Childhood Education Journal, 2021
As early childhood educators of young children, we recognize that children draw what they know from cultural transmissions, moving through many developmental transitions with drawing. As children's skills developed, a PreK/Kindergarten teacher in a university laboratory school classroom with 27 children was interested in studying ways children can…

Robertson, Amy D.; Goodhew, Lisa M.; Scherr, Rachel E.; Heron, Paula R. L. – Physical Review Physics Education Research, 2021
Existing research identifying common student ideas about forces focuses on students' misunderstandings, misconceptions, and difficulties. In this paper, we characterize student thinking in terms of resources, framing student thinking as continuous with formal physics. Based on our analysis of 2048 written responses to conceptual questions, we…

Cumber, Peter – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2021
Mechanical engineering students often find the formulation and analysis of dynamical systems difficult. The response of some mechanical engineering undergraduates is that as much as possible courses on mechanics are best avoided. The aim of this paper is to produce some interesting dynamical systems that may help to change the opinions of the…

Milsom, John A. – Physics Teacher, 2021
The classic brachistrochrone problem is standard material in intermediate mechanics. Many variations exist including some accessible to introductory students. While a quantitative solution isn't feasible in introductory classes, qualitative discussions can be very beneficial since kinematics, Newton's laws, energy conservation, and motion along…

Olsho, Alexis; Brahmia, Suzanne White; Smith, Trevor; Boudreaux, Andrew – Physics Teacher, 2021
Electromagnetism (E&M) is often challenging for students enrolled in introductory college-level physics courses. Compared to mechanics, the mathematics of E&M is more sophisticated and the representations are more abstract. Furthermore, students may lack productive intuitions they had with force and motion. In this article, we explore the…

Falfushynska, Halina; Kryzhanovskyi, Serhii; Korsun, Igor; Monchuk, Maryna – Physics Education, 2021
The aim of the present work is to demonstrate the expediency of using information technologies on the study of Brownian motion. The importance of using such software as VirtualDub, Tracker and Google Sheets for the study of Brownian motion has been substantiated. This made it possible to determine the values that cannot be measured directly (the…

Harshbarger, Dena; Wiechman, Joseph – Science and Children, 2021
This article describes a force and motion unit that spanned four weeks (50 minutes a day) in a fifth-grade classroom. The inquiry-based learning progression mirrors Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development (1952) because it allowed students to manipulate materials and ideas as they actively constructed and reconstructed their knowledge of motion…

Polley, J. P. – Physics Teacher, 2021
While the three laws of conservation of energy, momentum, and angular momentum are all mentioned in introductory textbooks, there are few experiments through which students can investigate the conservation of angular momentum. Most experiments consist of collisions between rotating disks, in which one disk is dropped on another, or in which the…

Medel-Esquivel, Ricardo; Gómez-Vargas, Isidro; García-Salcedo, Ricardo; Vázquez, J. Alberto – Physics Teacher, 2021
One of the main topics of elementary physics is the idea that every material is composed of "little particles that move around in perpetual motion, attracting each other when they are a little distance apart, but repelling upon being squeezed into one other." These particles could be atoms or molecules. Atoms are the smallest part into…
