A study of the influence of several instructor and course variables on student ratings found no significant effects related to instructor's rank or gender, course content, or class size. A finding that elective courses yielded more positive ratings than required courses was consistent with previous findings. (MSE)

Noting weaknesses in "standard" methods of measuring listening skills, developes a five-factor model utilizing three different kinds of memory and adding tasks requiring interpretation and concentration. A modified version of the Approaches to Studying Inventory was administered to students in an innovative medical school. It was found that, although the inventory was not predictive of academic success for this group, it might be helpful in student counseling, and student responses were consistent with the school's philosophy.
