Problems that confront nursing education and the quality of doctoral preparation are discussed in this article and include the steep rise in requests from nurses for admission into doctoral programs and tight university budgets; other concerns are the development of scholars and sharing research findings. The University of California at Los Angeles has initiated an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE). A combination of inadequate preparation and misperception of the nature of the process of original research contributes to many social science doctoral candidates' inability to complete their dissertations. A survey revealed that most of Canada's PharmD pharmacists were trained in the United States. Canada has no PharmD programs, and its master's program training varies.
