Conick, John E. – Migration Today, 1983
Describes the approach to resettlement for recently arrived refugees implemented within the state of South Carolina. Suggests that non-clustering of refugees leads to quick acculturation if there is wide community support, but that certain services are more readily available when refugees are clustered. (GC)

Andersen, Charles J., Ed. – Educational Record, 1982
The projected population of young adults 18 to 24 years old in 1990 is mapped by state, and a chart shows trends in the size of this cohort for each state since 1965 and projected through 1990. Regional totals are also provided. (MSE)

Ards, Sheila – Evaluation Review, 1989
Three conceptual approaches to estimating local child abuse rates using the National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect data set are evaluated. All three approaches yield estimates of actual abuse cases that exceed the number of reported cases. (SLD)

Eggebeen, David J.; Uhlenberg, Peter – Journal of Family Issues, 1989
Used data from 1940 through 1980 Public Use Samples of the United States Census to examine how changes in fertility patterns of women have affected age distribution of parents for successive cohorts of children. Found decline in average age of mothers and fathers across cohorts of children, partly reflecting a rapid increase in teenage pregnancies…

Hsiung, Tung-Hsing; And Others – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1994
The alternative proposed by Wilcox (1989) to the James second-order statistic for comparing population means when variances are heterogeneous can sometimes be invalid. The degree to which the procedure is invalid depends on differences in sample size, the expected values of the observations, and population variances. (SLD)

Price, Lydia J. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
The ability of the NORMIX algorithm to recover overlapping population structures was compared to the OVERCLUS procedure and another clustering procedure in a Monte Carlo study. NORMIX is found to be more accurate than other procedures in recovering overlapping population structure when appropriate implementation options are specified. (SLD)

Masene, Robert S. – Science Activities, 2001
Explains the capture-recapture method which is used to estimate population size by researchers. Uses a computer simulation game to teach students the capture-recapture method of population size estimation. (Contains 24 references.) (Author/YDS)

Neugebauer, Roger – Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, 2005
While Americans obsess over childhood concerns about obesity and the Internet, vastly greater numbers of children around the world are dealing with more basic survival issues. To put the world of childhood in some perspective, the author reviews a bevy of demographic statistics about young children. In this article, the author has noted…

Lichter, Daniel T.; Johnson, Kenneth M. – Rural Sociology, 2007
This paper documents changing patterns of concentrated poverty in nonmetro areas. Data from the Decennial U.S. Census Summary Files show that poverty rates--both overall and for children--declined more rapidly in nonmetro than metro counties in the 1990s. The 1990s also brought large reductions in the number of high-poverty nonmetro counties and…

Mongeon, Rebecca, Ed.; Tambascio, Donna, Ed. – Wellesley Centers for Women, 2008
The "Research & Action Report," published twice a year, is a window on the activities and initiatives at the Wellesley Centers for Women. The report typically features news about the Centers, interviews with researchers, commentary on recent events or social trends affecting women and girls, announcements of new publications, and much more.…

Sinton, Diana Stuart; Huber, William A. – Journal of Geography, 2007
Ethnic music is a strong indicator of cultural identity. Central and Eastern European ethnic groups have historically been associated with folk music traditions, such as polka, and radio broadcasting patterns in the United States reflect continued demand for and support of this music. Data from the 2000 Census was used to generate maps of the…

Mislevy, Robert J. – 1993
Relationships between Bayesian ability estimates and the parameters of a normal population distribution are derived in the context of classical test theory. Analogies are provided for use as approximations in work with item response theory (IRT). The following issues are addressed: (1) the relationship between the distribution of the latent…

Braun, Mark J.; Scully, Timothy L. – 1995
This study was grounded in the geography school of diffusion theory, specifically focusing on Ormrod's concept of "spatial receptiveness." A survey was conducted to test how location of residence (urban vs. rural) is associated with consumer attitudes toward high-definition television (HDTV) and other expanded television services.…

Phelps, Richard – 1993
This study attempted to determine whether or not the location of states' public universities makes a difference in state population growth and by inference, in state economic growth. Specifically the study examined the effect of the size of the host community relative to the state population or the proportion of the state's population that resides…

McFalls, Joseph A., Jr. – Population Bulletin, 1991
The study of demography must begin with an understanding of the three sources of population changes: fertility, mortality, and migration. This paper leads prospective demographers--or anyone interested in population--through the dynamics of these three variables, introducing them to the forces that cause populations to grow or decline, and that…
