Peer reviewedEverett, J. E. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1983
An approach to determining the number of factors to be retained from a factor analysis using split-half factor comparabilities is presented. The use of this approach in determining proper factor rotation is also discussed. (JKS)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Goodness of Fit, Oblique Rotation
Peer reviewedStevens, Gwendolyn; Gardner, Sheldon – Behavioral Disorders, 1982
Forty-three elementary school teachers Q-sorted 50 statements concerning various aspects of hyperkinesis. The factors obtained suggested that, although teachers do not differ from each other in their definitions of the behavioral aspects of this disorder, there are important and consistent differences in their conceptions of the underlying causes…

Peer reviewedMaruyama, Geoffrey – American Educational Research Journal, 1982
T.W. Elig and I.H. Frieze used a multitrait, multimethod approach to contrast three methods for measuring attributions: unstructured/open-ended, structured/unidimensional, and structured/ipsative. This paper reanalyzed their data using confirmatory factor analysis techniques. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Attribution Theory, Evaluation Methods, Factor Analysis, Individual Differences
Peer reviewedGiambra, Leonard M. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
The 344 items of the Imaginal Processes Inventory plus age were intercorrelated for 1300 subjects. This intercorrelation matrix was subjected to a principal components analysis; 53 principal components then were rotated to a Varimax solution. Results of the factor analysis are given in terms of the meaningful interpreted components. (Author)
Descriptors: Adults, Affective Measures, Behavior Rating Scales, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedDomino, George; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1982
Presents a psychometric instrument, the Suicide Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ), which assesses community attitudes toward suicide. While further refinements of the SOQ are needed, results support its usefulness and also point out the complexities of attitudes toward suicide. Factors (N=15) accounted for 76.6% of the total variance. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Adults, Attitude Measures, Community Attitudes, Cultural Context
Peer reviewedRaden, David – Social Behavior and Personality, 1981
Performed a principal components factor analysis on scores of 245 undergraduates to a short version of the F Scale and measures of prejudice, attitude toward welfare, toleration of political deviance, punitiveness toward criminals, and support of the Vietnam War. Analysis produced two factors: authoritarian aggression and attitude toward welfare.…

Peer reviewedGuilford, J. P. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1981
Data obtained from previously published reports of factor analyses concerning aptitudes were re-analyzed using Guilford's structure of intellect model as a theoretical basis for the re-analysis. Results provide support for the model and for its oblique nature. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Academic Aptitude, Factor Analysis, Intelligence, Intelligence Tests
Peer reviewedSilverstein, A. B. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1982
Performed confirmatory factor analyses on the standardization data for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Revised) to test competing two- and three-factor hypotheses. Results slightly favored the three-factor solution, but must be weighed against the greater convenience of the two-factor…
Descriptors: Children, Factor Analysis, Intelligence Tests, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedClarkson, Douglas B. – Psychometrika, 1979
The jackknife by groups and modifications of the jackknife by groups are used to estimate standard errors of rotated factor loadings for selected populations in common factor model maximum likelihood factor analysis. Simulations are performed in which t-statistics based upon these jackknife estimates of the standard errors are computed.…

Peer reviewedSatterly, D. J. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1979
A hierarchical factor analysis of 430 pupils' scores was performed on a matrix of correlations between three measures of cognitive style (analytic-synthetic; field independence; leveling-sharpening) and achievement in mathematics, geography, and English. Findings provide some support for the independence of cognitive style from general…

Peer reviewedWalters, Lynda Henley; Klein, Alice E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
Underlying constructs of the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children (NSLOCSC) were identified through factor analysis and cross-validated with two similar samples of high school students. The two resultant dimensions appeared to measure Social Control (six items) and Self Control (two items). (Author/GK)

Peer reviewedKnapp, Robert R.; Kanpp, Lila – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A consistently found structure of eight group factors based on occupational activity interest items is presented. This study determines whether a similar second-order, structure of interests would result from factor analysis based on responses to sex-balanced items. Results support the group interest structure obtained in previous analyses.…
