Peer reviewedSeltzer, Joseph; Wilson, James A. – Journal of Leisure Research, 1980
Insight into the patterns of leisure time usage may lead to a better understanding of the relationships between work and leisure and other aspects of an individual's life. A five-factor model was developed to explicate individual motivations for leisure pursuits. (JN)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Flexible Working Hours, Individual Needs, Leisure Time
Peer reviewedSteffen, John J.; And Others – Social Behavior and Personality, 1979
College women were given questionnaires designed to measure aspects of social competence. Scores were factor analyzed. Loadings obtained from samples suggested three major dimensions: hetereosexual anxiety, social self-esteem, and dating activity. Oblique rotation indicated that the factors were highly interrelated. (Author/BEF)
Descriptors: Anxiety, Dating (Social), Factor Analysis, Females
Peer reviewedMcCrae, Robert R.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1980
The invariance of factor structures in the Guilford Zimmerman Temperament Survey is clearly evident. Basic personality structure appears little affected by social and historical change. Results favor the stability model for objectively measured personality traits in adult males. (JAC)
Descriptors: Adult Development, Age Differences, Aging (Individuals), Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedThompson, Bruce; Miller, Albert H. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1978
Canadian and American education students rated each of four teacher types in terms of 24 characteristics. The ratings were factor-analyzed and the teacher types arrayed along the four resultant-principal components. Dissonance theory suggests that findings have implications for teacher education and for student ratings of teachers. (Author)
Descriptors: Education Majors, Factor Analysis, Higher Education, Student Attitudes
Peer reviewedGurel, Lois M.; Gurel, Lee – Home Economics Research Journal, 1979
A study involving 500 undergraduates in a clothing and textile course identified five factors seen as central components of clothing interest: concern with personal appearance, experimenting with appearance, heightened awareness of clothes, clothing as enhancement of security, and clothing as enhancement of individuality. (JH)
Descriptors: Clothing, Concept Formation, Factor Analysis, Measurement Instruments
Peer reviewedWerts, C. E.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1980
This paper demonstrates how the problem of calibrating measures can be formulated in terms of confirmatory factor analysis. The relationships between traditional approaches and a confirmatory factor approach are specified. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Equated Scores, Factor Analysis, Intermediate Grades
Peer reviewedO'Grady, Kevin E.; Janda, Louis H. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1979
This inventory measures sex guilt, hostility guilt, and morality-conscience guilt. Analyses indicate the appropriateness of a simple present-absent scoring system. Internal structure of each subscale is complex. Intercorrelations of scores are larger for males. (Author/BEF)
Descriptors: Adults, Behavior Rating Scales, Correlation, Factor Analysis
Mihevic, Patricia M.; Spray, Judith A. – Research Quarterly, 1979
A multivariate post hoc procedure (the Roy-Bose procedure) which allows for the construction of an infinite number of confidence intervals or probability statements concerning the p variables, all of which hold at a 100(1-a) percent level of confidence, is demonstrated and compared to other procedures. (JD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Comparative Analysis, Exercise Physiology, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedRounds, James B., Jr.; Hendel, Darwin D. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1980
Examined the dimensionality of the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale. Factors were identified and labeled as Mathematics Text Anxiety and Numerical Anxiety. Factor-derived scales were developed and correlated with five specific anxiety scales and an arithmetic test. (Author)
Descriptors: Behavior Rating Scales, Factor Analysis, Females, Mathematics Anxiety
Peer reviewedPedhazur, Elazar J.; Tetenbaum, Toby J. – Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1979
The rationale underlying the construction of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI), and the psychometric properties of the resulting instrument are examined in two studies. Subjects were graduate students of education. (Author/MP)

Peer reviewedAversano, Francis M.; Feldhusen, John F. – Teaching of Psychology, 1979
Describes study to determine if the Endeavor Instructional Rating Form (EIRF) and the Purdue Instructor and Course Appraisal: CAFETERIA System can be used in a course that employs an innovative instructional model. Results indicate that both instruments are effective for course and instructor evaluation. (Author/KC)
Descriptors: Course Evaluation, Factor Analysis, Higher Education, Instructional Innovation
Peer reviewedRevelle, William – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Hierarchical cluster analysis is shown to be an effective method for forming scales from sets of items. Comparisons with factor analytic techniques suggest that hierarchical analysis is superior in some respects for scale construction. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Cluster Analysis, Factor Analysis, Item Analysis, Rating Scales
Peer reviewedHug, Nancy; And Others – Journal of Psychology, 1978
Finds that one factor of the "Preschool Attainment Record" (PAR) accounts for 69 percent of the variance, indicating the need for standardization of the PAR. (RL)
Descriptors: Evaluation, Factor Analysis, Factor Structure, Needs Assessment
Peer reviewedEducational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
Factor scale scores are sometimes used as weights to create composite variables representing the variables included in a factor analysis. If these composite variables are then used to predict some dependent variable, serious theoretical and methodological problems arise. This paper explores these problems and suggests strategies for circumventing…
