Peer reviewedMuller, Bodo – Journal of Chemical Education, 1995
Describes a simple and reliable test method used to investigate the corrosion-inhibiting effects of various chelating agents on aluminum pigments in aqueous alkaline media. The experiments that are presented require no complicated or expensive electronic equipment. (DDR)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, Higher Education, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedBrewer, Carol A. – American Biology Teacher, 1996
Presents investigations of leaf surface wetness that provide ideal opportunities for students to explore the relationships between leaf form and function, to study surface conditions of leaves and plant physiology, and to make predictions about plant adaptation in different environments. Describes simple procedures for exploring questions related…

Peer reviewedNolan, William T.; Gish, Thaddeus J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1996
Presents 6 short experiments with liquid nitrogen that 12- and 13-year-old students can safely perform under close supervision. Helps the students in learning a number of basic chemical principles while spurring their curiosity and showing them how much fun chemistry can be. (JRH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Science Activities, Science Experiments, Scientific Concepts
Peer reviewedSingerman, Joseph, Ed. – Science Teacher, 2000
Tells the story of an experiment conducted by Galileo and proves that a light pebble and a heavy rock travel with equal speed when dropped from the same distance and touch the ground at the same time. Indicates the importance of open-mindedness and tolerance. First published in 1939. (YDS)
Descriptors: Gravity (Physics), Physics, Science Education, Science Experiments
Peer reviewedBroshears, Williams C.; Esteb, John J.; Richter, Jeremy; Wilson, Anne M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Epoxide chemistry is widely used in organic synthesis and regularly discussed in organic chemistry textbooks. An experiment to generate dimethyldioxirane in situ from acetone using Oxone is explained.
Descriptors: Textbooks, Organic Chemistry, Science Laboratories, Science Experiments
Peer reviewedMarkovic, Rade; Baranac, Marija; Jovanovic, Vesna; Dzambaski, Zdravko – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The experiment describes the regioselective synthesis of a stereodefined push-pull alkene from inexpensive chemicals. Important concepts in organic chemistry, such as resonance theory and role of solvent polarity on formation of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which affect the configuration of the double bond in predictable way are…

Peer reviewedNestle, Nikolaus; Dakkouri, Marwan; Rauscher, Hubert – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The increase in NMR relaxation rates as a result of dissolved paramagnetic species on the sample of superoxygenated drinking water is demonstrated. It is concluded that oxygen content in NMR samples is an important issue and can give rise to various problems in the interpretation of both spectroscopic and NMR imaging or relaxation experiments.
Descriptors: Water, Chemistry, Science Instruction, Laboratory Experiments
Peer reviewedWilliams, Kathryn R.; Adhyaru, Bhavin – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An experiment on kinetics of deactivation of carbonic anhydrase by removal of zinc is demonstrated. Carbonic anhydrase, the enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate, requires on Zn(II) ion in its active site, and removal of the zinc cofactor by complexion to another ligand leaves the apoenzyme, which is totally…

Peer reviewedPowell, Cedric J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A survey of progress made over the past ~30 years (1970 - 2004) to improve the reliability of surface analyses by XPS is presented. The basic principles of XPS are very simple yet there is considerable complexity in designing experiments, interpreting data, and analyzing the results for the many different modes of operation and many different…

Peer reviewedEsteb, John J.; Gligorich, Keith M.; O'Reilly, Stacy A.; Richter, Jeremy M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A mixture of potassium hydroxide and alpha-naphthaldehyde (1) are heated under solvent-free conditions to produce 1-naphthoic acid (2) and 1-naphthalenemethanol (3). The experiment offers several advantages over many existing exercises including the ease of reaction workup, shorter reaction time, relative environmental friendliness of the…

Peer reviewedBentley, Anne K.; Crone, Wendy C.; Farhoud, Mohammed; Ellis, Arthur B.; Lisensky, George C.; Nickel, Anne-Marie L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
An experiment that highlights the role electrochemistry plays in the fabrication of nanoscale structures is presented. The movement and alignment of the nickel nanowires were observed, when manipulated using magnetic fields through the lens of an optical microscope using common magnets to alter the applied magnetic field.
Descriptors: Physics, Chemistry, Science Experiments, Laboratory Equipment
Peer reviewedDungey, Keenan E.; Muller, David P.; Gunter, Tammy – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
An experiment is presented that introduces students to nanotechnology through the preparation of nanoparticles and their visualization using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experiment familiarizes the students with nonaqueous solvents, biphasic reactions, phase-transfer agents, ligands to stabilize growing nanoparticles, and bidentate…

Peer reviewedHale, Penny S.; Maddox, Leone M.; Shapter, Joe G.; Voelcker, Nico H.; Ford, Michael J.; Waclawik, Eric R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The technique for producing quantum-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles is much safer than a technique that used hydrogen sulfide gas to produce cadmium sulfide and zinc sulfide nanoparticles. A further advantage of this method is the ability to sample the solution over time and hence determine the growth kinetics.
Descriptors: Kinetics, Chemistry, Science Instruction, Models
Peer reviewedCerrada, Elena; Laguna, Mariano – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A facile synthesis of two gold(I) complexes with 1,2-benzenedithiolate ligand and two different bidentate phosphines are described. A detailed sequence of NMR experiments is suggested to determine the structure of the compounds.
Descriptors: Structural Analysis (Science), Inorganic Chemistry, Science Experiments, Science Instruction
Peer reviewedVincent, John B.; Woski, Stephen A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A laboratory course called cytochrome c that focuses on the theme of biochemical research is presented. The students follow this course by incorporating team-investigation and self-directed experimentation that provides them an opportunity to experience the excitement of research.
