The Application of Time Delay to Teach Students with Extensive Support Needs
Fred Spooner1; Robert Pennington1; Ashley Anderson1; Thai Ray Williams1
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v57 n5 p358-366 2025
Time delay is one of the most established practices for teaching both functional and academic skills to students with extensive support needs (ESN). Students with ESN have intellectual or developmental disabilities and, in some cases, other support needs (e.g., physical disabilities, sensory impairments) and require comprehensive instructional and environmental supports to access and benefit from the educational and social opportunities available to their peers. Given the demonstrated effectiveness of time delay for teaching a range of skills to students with ESN, there is a need to support teachers in its implementation. The purpose of this article is to provide guidance in and considerations for planning and implementing time delay procedures for teaching new skills to students.
