Furber, Donald – French Rev, 1969

Edwards, Billy C.; Edgerly, John W. – J Counseling Psychol, 1970
Counselor client congruence does produce significant change in the cognitive area as measured by the Evaluative dimension of the Semantic Differential. However, this change is not necessarily accompanied by commensurate change in noncognitive adjustment as measured by the Dymond Adjustment Index. (Author)

Scholes, Robert J. – J Verb Learning Verb Beh, 1969
It was determined that suprasegmental features effect the ability of very young children (3 years) to decide whether strings of words are to be treated as sentences or nonsentences, whereas for adults and older children grammatical cues alone suffice. (FWB)

Kareev, Yaakov – Child Development, 1982
Tests the hypothesis that semantic memory changes with age such that concepts become more strongly associated with their superordinate classes than with their exemplars. The Stroop color-naming technique was employed with 48 children 8 through 12 years of age to measure the degree of semantic activation between concepts in memory. (Author)

Vleduts-Stokolov, N. – Information Processing and Management, 1982
Describes technique developed as automatic support to subject heading indexing at BIOSIS based on use of formalized language for semantic representation of biological texts and subject headings. Language structures, experimental results, and analysis of journal/subject heading and author/subject heading correlation data are discussed. References…

Cherry, Rochelle Silberzweig; Kruger, Barbara – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1983
Selective auditory attention skills of 21 learning disabled children as compared with the performance of 23 normal achievers (seven- to nine-years-old) were examined. Performance of the LD children was affected more than normal achievers under all distractor conditions. (Author/CL)

Stinson, Michael – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1982
The effects of contextual words upon the identification of test words in sentences were studied with 21 hearing impaired children (seven to 12 years old). Significantly more correct discriminations were made on congruous and neutral sentences than on incongruous sentences indicating that hearing impaired children use contextual cues. (Author/SEW)

Pindell, Richard – English Journal, 1983
Points out that language abuses--whether jargon, euphemism, or malapropism--blur the distinction between words. Stresses the need for English instructors that can teach students the grammatical rules and inspire them with a love of language. (MM)

Gailor, Denis – ELT Journal, 1983
Some grammatical points often left unexplained about the meaning, use, and teaching of these verb forms are outlined and discussed, drawing on textbooks and usage literature. Comparisons are made between the several forms, and traditional grammatical approaches are compared and contrasted. (MSE)

Clark, Herbert H.; Gerrig, Richard J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1983
Assumptions about comprehension of utterances are challenged in two experiments using as an example the verb phrase "to do a Richard Nixon on a tape" (i.e., erase it). It is argued that creating meanings, as with this phrase, works differently from selecting senses for utterances and that many require a mixture of the two. (MSE)

Brownell, Judith – Communication Education, 1982
Describes the functioning of Murray's Interpersonal Communication Laboratory (first established in 1949) designed to help students internalize the principles of general semantics and apply them to everyday problems in communication. (PD)

Wepsiec, Jan – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1981
Examines the syntactic structures of Library of Congress subject headings pertaining to sociology, and centers on the use of grammatical categories in modifiers of the focal nouns. It is found that more than one syntactic type may correspond to a given semantic type. Eleven references are cited. (FM)

Schvaneveldt, Roger W.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Six different categorization tasks were studied in an investigation of the effects of semantic relatedness on categorization performance. An intersection model is proposed to account for the findings, which are generally inconsistent with decision-bias theories and with simple versions of spreading activation theory. (Author/PN)

Lupker, Stephen J.; Katz, Albert N. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Two experiments were undertaken to evaluate the influence of automatic semantic processing of pictures on word judgments. Results indicated that (1) perceptual factors influence responding in these types of tasks, (2) picture processing can facilitate word processing in some circumstances, and (3) incompatible background pictures can interfere…

Schwartz, Steven – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1981
Past studies of autistic children's memory for linguistic materials have shown that autistics have a special linguistic coding difficulty. Because the autistic deficit stems from a failure to use semantic and syntactic knowledge or from a failure to acquire such forms, future research should explore the mechanics underlying this deficit. (PJM)
