The European Patent Convention has informed Harvard University that its application for a patent on a genetically engineered mouse may be refused. The application was the first to obtain patent protection across most of Europe for a transgenic animal, one which has been implanted with genes from another animal. (MSE)

Peer reviewedAlberti, N.; And Others – European Journal of Engineering Education, 1988
The essentials of an Italian degree in Management Engineering are described. Aspects such as engineers versus managers, educational curriculum and envisaged development of the course are discussed. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Course Content, Engineering Education, Engineers
Peer reviewedMasarnau, Juan – European Journal of Engineering Education, 1988
Discusses a product development structure, including marketing, design, technology, industrial manufacturing, reasoning, and objects. Describes needs of the interface in terms of marketing, industrial design, technology, and industry. (YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Design, Engineering Education, Industry
Peer reviewedJackson, E. A. – European Journal of Engineering Education, 1988
Investigates the marker-marker reliability of an examination for a third-year degree course in circuit theory. Reports that the coefficient of correlation between markers fell within the range 0.94 to 0.98. (YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Engineering Education, Essay Tests, Interrater Reliability
Peer reviewedPlatt, Craig W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
A structural model of the consequences of success attributions--derived from B. Weiner's attribution model--was tested using 208 first-term college students. Although the hypothesized model was rejected based on a chi-square, goodness-of-fit test, a specification search yielded a model that fit the data and was consistent with Weiner's theory.…
Descriptors: Attribution Theory, College Freshmen, Engineering Education, Higher Education
Peer reviewedSleicher, Charles A. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1989
Describes benefits and sacrifices of an accreditation program to a department. Discusses some negative effects of accreditation on chemical engineering curricula and what might be done to make improvements. (YP)
Descriptors: Accreditation (Institutions), Chemical Engineering, College Science, Evaluation
Peer reviewedCooper, Stewart E.; Robinson, Debra A. G. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1988
Administered anticipated adjustment form of Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) to entering college freshmen majoring in science or engineering, then administered actual adjustment form in October of freshman year. Results support use of SACQ for this group. Comparison of results from anticipated and actual adjustment forms suggests…
Descriptors: College Freshmen, Engineering, Expectation, Higher Education
Peer reviewedRoth, Susan King – Visible Language, 1994
Discusses a preliminary study of the effect of ballot interface design on voting behavior. Finds significant problems related to human factors and the organization of information on the ballot on mechanical and electronic voting machines. (RS)
Descriptors: Design Requirements, Higher Education, Human Factors Engineering, Readability

Peer reviewedRushton, J. Philippe – Intelligence, 1994
Cranial capacities are calculated from external head measurements reported for 40 samples (tens of thousands of subjects) from a 1990 review of ergonomically important body measurements compiled by the International Labour Office. The correlation between brain size and intelligence for groups and individuals is discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adults, Correlation, Genetics, Human Factors Engineering
Peer reviewedGedney, Matt – SRA Journal of the Society of Research Administrators, 1994
A recent mechanical engineering research contract between the Georgia Institute of Technology and an international industrial manufacturer contains a clause providing an incentive for cost containment. The measure helps bridge the gap between the expectations of an industrial sponsor and the needs of the university. (Author/MSE)
Descriptors: Contracts, Costs, Engineering, Higher Education
Peer reviewedBrazziel, William F.; Brazziel, Marian E. – Journal of Science Education and Technology, 1995
