Peer reviewedPowers, Keiko Ichikawa; Anglin, M. Douglas – Evaluation Review, 1993
Whether methadone maintenance treatment demonstrates cumulative (rehabilitative) or stabilizing effects on behavior of narcotics addicts over multiple treatment episodes was studied involving 993 addicts in a quasi-experimental design. Observed behavioral changes and longitudinal self-reports indicate stabilizing, but not cumulative, effects. (SLD)

Peer reviewedRoth, Wolff-Michael – Science Teacher, 1991
Several types of physics activities that use real-world problems to motivate learners, use computers to assist in developing conceptual understandings, connect problem situations to mathematical models, and use the models to analyze other real-world problems are presented. The topics of racing sports, sailing, and damped harmonic oscillations are…

Peer reviewedKoorland, Mark A.; Nelson, C. Michael – Exceptional Children, 1990
This critique discusses conceptual and practical issues raised in a paper by D. Marston (EC 210 837) on choosing the most technically adequate graph for measuring progress on individual education plans. The critique argues that the Standard Behavior Chart is a technically adequate and useful measurement tool. (JDD)

Peer reviewedMarston, Douglas; Deno, Stanley L. – Exceptional Children, 1990
This article responds to a criticism (EC 231 964) of a paper that discusses graphs for measuring progress on individual education plans (EC 210 837). It notes that the type of chart used is not a major issue; the important point is that teachers repeatedly gather data on educationally relevant tasks and evaluate intervention effectiveness. (JDD)

Peer reviewedKerley, Lyndell M. – Mathematics and Computer Education, 1990
Described is software which allows a student to use simulation to produce analytical output as well as graphical results. The results include a frequency histogram of a selected population distribution, a frequency histogram of the distribution of the sample means, and test the normality distributions of the sample means. (KR)

Peer reviewedEddins, Susan K.; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1994
Presents a lesson in which students communicate verbally and in writing to create and describe geometric transformations, develop vocabulary, demonstrate ability to give unambiguous instructions to translate a triangle, form and test conjectures, and create extensions of problems. Includes reproducible student worksheets and questions for…
Descriptors: Geometry, Graphs, Intermediate Grades, Lesson Plans
Peer reviewedShirato, Linda; Badics, Joseph – Research Strategies, 1997
Reports on a survey of 631 colleges that investigated changes in library instruction and compared the results with previous LOEX (Library Orientation/Instruction Exchange) studies (1979, 1987). Provides data on size and type of institution, administration of instruction, types and methods of instruction (required, print, nonprint, methods used,…

Peer reviewedLindquist, Peter S.; Hammel, Daniel J. – Journal of Geography, 1998
Describes an exercise for college and high school students that relates descriptive statistics to the regional climatic classification. The exercise introduces students to simple calculations of central tendency and dispersion, the construction and interpretation of scatterplots, and the definition of climatic regions. Forces students to engage…

Gijlers, Hannie; de Jong, Ton – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2005
In this study we investigate how prior knowledge influences knowledge development during collaborative discovery learning. Fifteen dyads of students (pre-university education, 15-16 years old) worked on a discovery learning task in the physics field of kinematics. The (face-to-face) communication between students was recorded and the interaction…

Coll, Richard Kevin; Ali, Sadaquat; Bonato, John; Rohindra, David – International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 2006
The learning difficulties for new entrant chemistry students from a multi-national, regional, tertiary education institution in the South Pacific were investigated using a purpose-designed diagnostic instrument. The instrument contained 25 items distributed across three themes: scientific reasoning, numeracy and scientific language literacy. The…

Parisi, Joseph – International Journal of Music Education, 2004
The purpose of this study was to assess fourth- and fifth-grade students' (9- and 10-year-olds') affective response and ability to discriminate between melody and improvisation after receiving instruction in singing and/or playing a piece in the blues style. Subjects (N= 102) were assigned to one of three equal-sized groups. Group 1 learned to…
