Conceição, Teresa; Baptista, Mónica; Ponte, João Pedro – Education Sciences, 2021
Multiple representations, such as experimental data, schemas, tables, and graphs, are an essential resource in science teaching. However, their use in the classroom typically poses a challenge for preservice teachers. The aim of this research is to examine changes in the practices of a group of preservice teachers regarding the use of multiple…

Wright, Lyniesha; Oliver-Hoyo, Maria – Journal of Chemical Education, 2021
An augmented reality (AR) application and an activity worksheet have been developed to support students in visualizing the concepts involved when solving [superscript 1]H NMR problems. This instructional resource was designed to encourage conceptual problem-solving and prevent memorization by eliminating the use of chemical shift tables. It uses…

Haugland, Ole Anton – Physics Teacher, 2017
Every time I have to jack up my car, I am a bit surprised by how slowly the scissors jack works the higher I raise it, and close to maximum height I need very little force to turn the crank. This agrees well with the principle of simple machines. Since I have to jack up my car at least twice a year to change between winter tires and summer tires,…

Rayner, John – Physics Teacher, 2017
This paper describes an experimental investigation of the skin depth effect for electromagnetic waves in salt water using a cell phone that is immersed to a critical depth where it no longer responds when called. We show that this critical depth is directly proportional to the theoretical skin depth for a range of salt concentrations.

Greenslade, Thomas B., Jr. – Physics Teacher, 2017
Charles Wheatstone's name was once familiar to students because they used his eponymous bridge to measure resistances. That usage seems to be disappearing--we all have access to digital ohmmeters--but the techniques that he developed for making electrical measurements can still be used with profit. Also, his work with measuring very short time…
