Fourth-grade students, wishing to expand upon what they learned about William Penn in their textbooks, sent in questions to the director of social studies in the Reading (Pennsylvania) schools. The director referred the students to sources (some primary) that would answer their questions. (KC)

The social studies class sponsored by Teacher Corps has played an important role in the Menominee Indian School District in the development of curriculum materials in arts and crafts; a videotape on childrearing practices of the Menominee; and projects, such as a recipe calendar. (ERB)

A museum program in Montreal encourages elementary and secondary school students to examine their surroundings and neighborhoods. Units focus on stained glass windows, houses, history of Montreal, the neighborhood, and architectural heritage. (KC)

Instead of deciding what should be taught, music educators should allow students to discover what they know about music. A project that requires students to compose musical commercials and a project that requires students to invent a notation system for writing music allow students to discover answers instead of memorizing them. Describes how a group of upper-elementary students in Highland, Illinois, designed and constructed a large mosaic mural depicting their city. A study compared the readability level of five categories of project books in 11 states. Using the Dale-Chall readability scale to rate the publications, it was concluded that 75 percent of the basic Unit I publications were above the reading level of 68 percent of the audience. (LRA)

Described is a five-day workshop in the new environmental art form of sky sculpture, which was presented at Wingfield High School in Jackson, Mississippi. Included are daily activities and the design considerations faced by students when planning their balloon creations for flight. (SJL)
