Peer reviewedGoodman, Joan F. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1977
Investigated was the relationship between medical diagnosis and intelligence scores in 282 mentally retarded children under 7 years old. (CL)
Descriptors: Clinical Diagnosis, Cognitive Development, Early Childhood Education, Exceptional Child Research
Peer reviewedThompson, Robert J., Jr. – Psychology in the Schools, 1977
Comparison of Stanford-Binet IQ scores obtained with the 1972 and 1960 norms of 228 children indicated that use of the 1972 norms resulted in substantially lower scores except at the lowest levels for functioning. The implications of these results were discussed. (Author)
Descriptors: Children, Evaluation Methods, Intelligence Quotient, Intelligence Tests
Peer reviewedHerring, Sheldon; Reitan, Ralph M. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986
Investigated whether men and women produced similar Verbal Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Performance IQ patterns following unilateral cerebral lesions. No consistent evidence of Sex X Lesioned Hemisphere interactions was found. Differences in the lateralization effects between men and women were not reflected in direction or pattern but only in…
Descriptors: Brain Hemisphere Functions, Intelligence Differences, Intelligence Quotient, Lateral Dominance
Peer reviewedWalsh, Anthony; Beyer, J. Arthur – Adolescence, 1987
Examined relationships between performance-verbal (P-V) discrepancy scores on Wechsler Intelligence Quotient Scales, love deprivation, and juvenile delinquency among 131 male juvenile probationers. P-V discrepancy scores were significantly related to love deprivation and violent crimes, supporting assertion that early emotional stresses affect…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Childhood Needs, Crime, Delinquency
Peer reviewedSilverstein, A. B.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1987
Explored the relations of the Concept Assessment Kit-Conservation to the Stanford-Binet and the Wide Range Achievement Test in a sample of 155 educable mentally retarded children. Results suggest that Piagetian intelligence is somewhat distinct from psychometric intelligence but suggest that the latter is the better predictor of academic…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Elementary Secondary Education, Exceptional Persons, Intelligence
Peer reviewedHilliard, Asa G., III – Negro Educational Review, 1987
The utility of intelligence tests for teaching and learning is questionable. These tests and the construct of intelligence have little value in classifying, predicting, and diagnosing the mental competence of Black children. Research may reveal components of mental potential which are more testable. Standardized I.Q. tests should be abandoned. (VM)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Educational Improvement, Elementary Secondary Education, Intelligence
Peer reviewedCarroll, John B. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1984
This article reviews Raymond B. Cattell's important contributions to intelligence testing and the theory of intelligence. His theory of fluid and crystallized intelligences and other high-order factors of cognitive ability has offered the most well-founded and reasonable approach to an acceptable theory. (Author/BS)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Processes, Culture Fair Tests, Intelligence
Peer reviewedFagan, Joseph F. – Intelligence, 1984
Individual differences in visual recognition memory and intelligence were correlated using 52 five-year-olds whose IQs ranged from 40-136. The correlation between memory performance and IQ was .70 for whole sample, and .61 when children with IQs below 75 were omitted. Immediate recognition memory is highly associated with intelligence. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Correlation, Early Childhood Education, Intelligence Differences
Peer reviewedFurlong, Michael J.; LeDrew, Lynette – Psychology in the Schools, 1985
Examined factors that influenced the educational diagnoses of a sample of referred students (N=80) in grades one through six. Results indicated that the recommendations made by the multidisciplinary teams were associated primarily with the level of the Full Scale IQ. (LLL)
Descriptors: Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Evaluation Criteria
Peer reviewedWaldrop, M. Mitchell – Science, 1984
Discusses various aspects of artificial intelligence, focusing on three interrelated issues: (1) representation of knowledge, which is roughly the machine equivalent of human memory; (2) control and use of knowledge, which corresponds to human abilities in problem solving and planning; and (3) the acquisition of knowledge, or what humans call…
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWright, Loyd – Journal of Reading, 1984
Describes a relatively easy and empirically evolved formula that can predict the reading achievement of low IQ children. (HOD)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Elementary Secondary Education, Intelligence Quotient, Intelligence Tests
Peer reviewedClark, C. – Oxford Review of Education, 1976
The purpose of this paper is to clarify some of the conceptual issues involved in discussions of psychology and education which rely on the assumption that biological factors serve as a basis or are responsible for human intelligence. (Author/ND)
Descriptors: Biological Influences, Cognitive Development, Developmental Psychology, Heredity
Tapia, Martha – 1999
The purposes of this study were to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence as measured by the Emotional Intelligence Inventory (EQI) (M. Tapia and J. Burry-Stock, 1998) and intelligence as measured by the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT). Other comparisons included measures of verbal and mathematics scores on the Preliminary…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Emotional Intelligence, Foreign Countries, High School Students
Peer reviewedRubin-Rabson, Grace – Phylon, 1974
Comparing group intelligence according to racial or geographic orgin has neither social nor scientific value; the emphasis in education and the social economy is not the creation of equality but the development of each individual to his maximum performance. (Author/JM)
Descriptors: Educational Policy, Environmental Influences, Genetics, Heredity
Peer reviewedHumphrey, Jean Milroy; Rice, James A. – Journal of Special Education, 1973
