Hanauer, David I.; Nicholes, Justin; Liao, Fang-Yu; Beasley, Aaron; Henter, Heather – CBE - Life Sciences Education, 2018
The San Diego Biodiversity Project introduces undergraduate students at four different 2- and 4-year schools to a short-term research experience (SRE) that was implemented as a module in the last third of a traditional laboratory course. The study assesses the qualities of this SRE for students using three different methods. Twenty-one…

Park, Han Jung; Kurien, Neethu M.; Rybolt, Thomas R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
We report here a method that utilizes the vapor pressure of HCl(g) above a concentrated HCl(aq) solution as an extremely simple and safe method to produce small amounts of HCl vapor in an IR gas cell. This vapor pressure approach can also be used to produce DCl(g) by introducing a few drops of concentrated DCl(aq) into the gas cell.

Zhou, Hua; Zhan, Wang; Wang, Liuyang; Guo, Lijun; Liu, Yun – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
To inspire upper-division undergraduate students to gain a deeper understanding of biorefinery, an experiment related to biofuels and lignin-based sunscreen products from corncob was performed in multiple offerings of a summer-semester class. Specifically, corncobs were pretreated with 1% H[subscript 2]SO[subscript 4] to obtain hemicellulose…

Applebee, Michelle S.; Johanson, Ami P.; Lawler-Sagarin, Kimberly A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
It is essential that chemists develop strong oral communication skills. At the undergraduate level, this requires students to build confidence in their ability to speak without a script and to utilize graphics effectively. We have developed a short activity that helps address common presentation issues such as overuse of text and reading verbatim…

Pye, Cory C.; Imperial, M. Angelique; Elson, Coltin; Himmelman, Megan L.; White, Jacquelyn A.; Lin, Fuhao – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
A new laboratory experiment investigating the ternary phase equilibrium of water-propan-2-ol-sodium chloride with one-, two-, and three-phase regions has been developed. Observations of the type and number of phases of a series of mixtures of the three components were made, and the results are then used in a systematic way to more finely choose…

Arulsamy, Navamoney – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
An experiment involving a moisture-sensitive synthesis and spectroscopic characterization suitable for the advanced inorganic laboratory course is presented. The acid-base complex ammonia borane (AB) is synthesized from the heterogeneous reaction between sodium borohydride and finely ground ammonium sulfate in tetrahydrofuran solvent. AB is…

Sehgal, Nitasha; Sylves, M. Eileen; Sahoo, Ansuman; Chow, Jacky; Walker, Sarah E.; Cullen, Paul J.; Berry, James O. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2018
Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) are a revolutionary tool based on a bacterial acquired immune response system. CRISPR has gained widespread use for gene editing in a variety of organisms and is an increasingly valuable tool for basic genetic research, with far-reaching implications for medicine, agriculture, and…

Castro-Godoy, Willber D.; Argüello, Juan E.; Martinelli, Marisa; Caminos, Daniel A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
The different reactivities between 1°, 2°, and 3° butyl chlorides by the unimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S[subscript N]1) mechanism were easily observed at 60 °C by a solvolysis reaction in ethanol with ether formation. The hydrogen ion from the byproduct HCl reacted with an acid--base indicator such as methyl red to induce a color change.…

Millard, Julie T.; Passang, Tenzin; Ye, Jiayu; Kline, Gabriel M.; Beachy, Tina M.; Hepburn, Victoria L.; Klinkerch, Edmund J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
An experiment for the upper-division undergraduate biochemistry laboratory is described in which students investigate the influence of genetic variations of cytochrome P450 1A2 on drug metabolism, using caffeine as a model compound. Saliva samples from human subjects are characterized for a single-nucleotide polymorphism in the CYP1A2 gene…

Cooper, Paul D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2018
This article describes the use of a spreadsheet to reinforce basic calculus that is expected of all university-level chemistry majors. The example provided shows a calculation using Excel to estimate, using a Riemann summation, the radiant exitance of a hot object using Planck's Law of Blackbody Radiation. The approach reinforces the elementary…

Coffman, Kirsten E.; Martínez-Gálvez, Gabriel; Brown, Ashley K.; Matchett, William E.; Horazdovsky, Bruce F. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2018
Mayo Clinic annually trains over 1,000 predoctoral students and postdoctoral research fellows in medicine and biomedical sciences. However, training opportunities are limited for those interested in teaching and mentoring undergraduates. Predoctoral students sought to provide practical, trainee-led, pedagogical learning opportunities. A survey…

Saqib, Abdul A. N.; Siddiqui, Khawar S. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2018
Determination of thermostability of enzymes is of prime importance for their successful industrial applications and, yet, the published data has often been incompletely analyzed to assess the suitability of enzymes. It is possible to determine meaningful thermostability parameters from the routinely acquired data through a straightforward method…

Thurtle-Schmidt, Deborah M.; Lo, Te-Wen – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2018
Disrupting a gene to determine its effect on an organism's phenotype is an indispensable tool in molecular biology. Such techniques are critical for understanding how a gene product contributes to the development and cellular identity of organisms. The explosion of genomic sequencing technologies combined with recent advances in genome-editing…

Loertscher, Jennifer; Lewis, Jennifer E.; Mercer, Allison M.; Minderhout, Vicky – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2018
Most chemistry educators agree that deep understanding of the nature of noncovalent interactions is essential for learning in chemistry. Yet decades of research have shown that students have persistent incorrect ideas about these interactions. We have worked in collaboration with a community of chemistry, biology, and biochemistry educators to…
