Brown, David W.; Schneider, Shanon D. – Journal of Computing in Childhood Education, 1992
Investigated elementary school students' responses to two user-computer interfaces while the students solved basic arithmetic problems. Interfaces involved users' direct manipulation of images or interpretation of symbols. Data indicated that students were more comfortable and solved problems more quickly when manipulating images than when…

Armstrong, Ronald D.; And Others – Psychometrika, 1992
A method is presented and illustrated for simultaneously generating multiple tests with similar characteristics from the item bank by using binary programing techniques. The parallel tests are created to match an existing seed test item for item and to match user-supplied taxonomic specifications. (SLD)

Tamamaki, Kinko – Language Learning, 1993
The alleged persistence of first-language dominance for arithmetic operations in bilinguals was investigated. Thirty-two Japanese-English bilinguals aged, 19-58, years solved arithmetic problems presented auditorily. Reaction time varied for short-term and long-term U.S. residents. Chang, Kuo-En; Lin, Mei-Ling; Chen, Sei-Wang – Computers & Education, 1998
Constructs a corrective learning system using the Socratic dialogue as a guide to correct mistakes in students' knowledge of subtraction. The Socratic dialog applies a dialectic method to present questions to the student and lets the student reconsider his or her own thinking. Results show that the Socratic-dialog approach is of great help to…

Goodson-Espy, Tracy – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1998
Utilizes a psychological-constructivist perspective to examine the transitions that students make from arithmetic to algebra in the context of problems that, from an expert's perspective, involve the concept of linear inequality. Reports that students who completed a transition to algebra operated at higher levels of reflective abstraction than…

Hippisley, Jonathan; Douglas, Graham – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1998
A study of 331 elementary school children tested the reliability of a computer resident interactive arithmetic test and found high levels of reliability, using single sitting and parallel forms methods. The study also tried to determine the validity of the interactive test by comparing it with arithmetic subtests of the Key Math Test (KMT). (PEN)
