Hutton, Una; Hudson, Richard; Wilding, John – Intelligence, 1997
This study investigated the possibility that the widely reported relationship between IQ and inspection time (IT) in children may derived from the involvement of aspects of attention. Results with 49 children aged 8 to 11 years show that IT is a significant predictor of Colored Progressive Matrices scores after age and attention measures are…

Kwate, Naa Oyo A. – Journal of Black Psychology, 2001
Examines the Eurocentric basis of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Third Edition (WISC-III) and reveals its antagonistic and incompatible relationship to an Africentric conception of intellectual and mental health. Suggests that the WISC-III provides a measure of misorientation quotient rather than intelligence quotient, and notes…

Axelrod, Bradley N.; And Others – Psychological Assessment, 1996
Equations for prorating the Wechsler Memory Scale--Revised General Memory (GM) and Delayed Recall (DR) index scores were confirmed in a clinical sample of 258 patients. These prediction equations for the GM and DR summary scores have validity for patient samples similar to those of the present study. (SLD)

Kaufman, Alan S.; And Others – Psychological Assessment, 1996
Six abilities derived from the fluid and crystallized intelligence theory of J. L. Horn were studied with 1,193 individuals in age groups between 15 and 94 years. Results supported Horn's classification of crystallized and quantitative as maintained abilities and of fluid and broad visualization as vulnerable abilities. (SLD)

Parker, Denis M.; Crawford, J. R.; Stephen, Edward – Intelligence, 1999
Tested 67 undergraduates on a new auditory inspection time task based on the ability to locate the left or right position of a stereophonic source and on a version of Raven's Progressive Matrices (Page and Crawford, unpublished). The new task appears to be accessible to a wider range of subjects than successive frequency discrimination tasks. (SLD)

Kaufman, Alan S. – Intelligence, 2001
Examined age changes in intellectual ability in the range from 16 to 89 years through 2 studies that involved IQs on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III (WAIS-III). Results are interpreted in the context of the fluid-crystallized intelligence theory of J. Horn. Studies used WAIS-III standardization data for 2,450 adults and longitudinal data…

Maller, Susan J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2001
Used the national standardization sample (n=2,200) of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Third Edition (WISC-III) to investigate differential item functioning (DIF) in 6 WISC-III subtests. Detected both uniform DIF and nonuniform DIF, finding DIF for about one third of the items studied. Discusses implications for use of the WISC-III.…

Sternberg, Robert J.; Grigorenko, Elena L. – Phi Delta Kappan, 2001
Suggests that federal definition of learning disabilities is wrong and represents politically expedient decisions rather than fundamental knowledge about psychology and education. Discusses why federal definition is erroneous. Offers seven recommendations to change the current system of identification and instruction of students with learning…

Mackintosh, N. J.; Bennett, E. S. – Intelligence, 2005
Although it is sometimes claimed that Raven's Matrices provide an almost pure measure of g, there is evidence that the easier items in the Standard Progressive Matrices and in Set I of the Advanced Matrices measure a perceptual or Gestalt factor distinct from the more analytic items in the rest of the tests. There is also, however, both factor…

Van Der Maas, Han L. J.; Dolan, Conor V.; Grasman, Raoul P. P. P.; Wicherts, Jelte M.; Huizenga, Hilde M.; Raijmakers, Maartje E. J. – Psychological Review, 2006
Scores on cognitive tasks used in intelligence tests correlate positively with each other, that is, they display a positive manifold of correlations. The positive manifold is often explained by positing a dominant latent variable, the g factor, associated with a single quantitative cognitive or biological process or capacity. In this article, a…

Veenman, M.V.J.; Spaans, M.A. – Learning & Individual Differences, 2005
The first objective of this study was establishing to what extent the development of metacognitive skills is associated with intellectual growth. As a second objective, the generality vs. domain specificity of metacognitive skills was investigated across age groups. A standardized intelligence test was administered to a group of first-year and…

Smith, Courtney B.; Watkins, Marley W. – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 2004
Regrouping Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) subtests into Bannatyne's spatial, conceptual, and sequential patterns has been thought by many to identify children with learning disabilities (LD). This study investigated the prevalence and diagnostic utility of WISC-III Bannatyne patterns by comparing 1,302 children…

Johnson, Wendy; Bouchard, Thomas J., Jr.; Krueger, Robert F.; McGue, Matt; Gottesman, Irving I. – Intelligence, 2004
The concept of a general intelligence factor or "g" is controversial in psychology. Although the controversy swirls at many levels, one of the most important involves "g's" identification and measurement in a group of individuals. If "g" is actually predictive of a range of intellectual performances, the factor…

Borsuk, Ellen R.; Watkins, Marley W.; Canivez, Gary L. – Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 2006
Although often applied in practice, clinically based cognitive subtest profile analysis has failed to achieve empirical support. Nonlinear multivariate subtest profile analysis may have benefits over clinically based techniques, but the psychometric properties of these methods must be studied prior to their implementation and interpretation. The…

Watkins, Marley W. – Psychological Assessment, 2006
According to J. B. Carroll's (1993) 3-stratum theory, performance on any subtest reflects a mixture of both 2nd-order and 1st-order factors. To disentangle these influences, variance explained by the general factor should be extracted first. The 1st-order factors are then residualized, leaving them orthogonal to the general factor and each other.…
