Swetz, Frank – Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Following a brief historical review of the mechanism of mathematical modeling, examples are included that associate a mathematical model with given data (changes in sea level) and that model a real-life situation (process of parallel parking). Also provided is the rationale for the curricular implementation of mathematical modeling. (JJK)

De Lange, J. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1993
Confirms and refutes Freudenthal's provocative prediction that by the year 2002 mathematics education will be integrated into other subjects. Discusses the Committee for the Development of Mathematics Education's report on reforms in mathematics teaching, assessment, and use of computers in mathematics education. (MDH)

Li, Yuan H.; Lissitz, Robert W. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2004
The analytically derived asymptotic standard errors (SEs) of maximum likelihood (ML) item estimates can be approximated by a mathematical function without examinees' responses to test items, and the empirically determined SEs of marginal maximum likelihood estimation (MMLE)/Bayesian item estimates can be obtained when the same set of items is…

Mok, Ida Ah Chee – Asia Pacific Journal of Education, 2006
The "East Asian learner paradox" refers to the apparent contradiction between the "teacher-dominated" learning environment in East Asia, which is generally perceived to be non-conducive to learning, and the outstanding performance of East Asian students in comparative studies. This study attempts to explain this phenomenon…

Castanho, Miguel A. R. B. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2002
The main distinction between the overlapping fields of molecular biophysics and biochemistry resides in their different approaches to the same problems. Molecular biophysics makes more use of physical techniques and focuses on quantitative data. This difference encounters two difficult pedagogical challenges when teaching molecular biophysics to…

Francis J. O'Brien – 1982
This document proves that the F statistic can be obtained by squaring t-test values, or that equivalent t-test values may be obtained by extracting the positive square roots of F values. Proof to varying degrees of completeness and accessibility has been given by other scholars, but generally these prior statements, particularly those available to…

Wallace, Johnny M.; Stewart, Grover – 1991
This module presents a real-world context in which mathematics skills (geometry and trigonometry) are used as part of a daily routine. The context is the machine tool technology field, and the module aims to help students develop the ability to analyze diagrams in order to make mathematical computations. The modules, which features applications…

Wallace, Johnny M.; Nichols, Gay – 1990
This module presents a real-world context in which mathematics skills are used as part of a daily routine. The context is the radiological technology field, and the module aims to help students use ratios and exponents as part of real-life problem solving. Materials in the module, most of which are designed for the teacher to duplicate and…

Silver, Edward A.; And Others – 1990
This paper reports the latest in a series of studies investigating children's performance in solving division story problems involving remainders. One aspect of the work involved examining the way in which "sense-making" is involved in the interpretation of the numerical solution obtained. Subjects were 195 sixth, seventh, and eighth…

Sullivan, Mary M. – 1993
Traditional elementary statistics instruction for non-majors has focused on computation. Rarely have students had an opportunity to interact with real data sets or to use questioning to drive data analysis, common activities among professional statisticians. Inclusion of data gathering and analysis into whole class and small group activities…
