King, Jason E. – 2002
A review of the literature reveals that important statistical algorithms and indices pertaining to logistic regression are being underused. This paper describes logistic regression in comparison with discriminant analysis and linear regression, and suggests that some techniques only accessible through computer syntax should be consulted in…

Schuegraf, E. J. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The design of programs to search large document data bases is discussed with regard to the use of compression coding combined with adoption of word fragments as the basic language elements. An algorithm is described for determination of a set of almost equifrequent fragments. Its efficiency is tested. (23 references) (Author)

Boas, R. P., Jr. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1972
The problem of getting a correct result when a fraction is reduced by cancelling a digit which appears in both the numerator and the denominator is extended from the base ten situation to any number base. (DT)

Miyano, Hisao; Inukai, Yukio – Psychometrika, 1982
The concept of sequential estimation is introduced in multidimensional scaling. The sequential estimation method developed in this paper refers to continually updating estimates of a configuration as new observations are added. Using artificial data, the performance of this sequential method is illustrated. (Author/JKS)

Ferligoj, Anuska; Batagelj, Vladimir – Psychometrika, 1982
Using constraints with cluster analysis limits the possible number of clusters. This paper deals with clustering problems where grouping is constrained by a symmetric and reflexive relation. Two approaches, along with illustrations, are presented. (Author/JKS)

Desarbo, Wayne S. – Psychometrika, 1982
A general class of nonhierarchical clustering models and associated algorithms for fitting them are presented. These models generalize the Shepard-Arabie Additive clusters model. Two applications are given and extensions to three-way models, nonmetric analyses, and other model specifications are provided. (Author/JKS)

Yannakoudakis, E. J.; Fawthrop, D. – Information Processing and Management, 1983
Results of analysis of 1,377 spelling error forms including three categories of spelling errors (consonantal, vowel, and sequential) demonstrate that majority of spelling errors are highly predictable when set of predefined rules based on phonological and sequential considerations are followed algorithmically. Eleven references and equivalent…

Levy, Phyllis Saltzman – NASSP Bulletin, 1981
Presents a model for schools based on the transmission of algorithms (a set of problem-solving procedures) through computers. Sample lesson series are provided, as well as a description of special teacher qualifications required and the benefits of such a program. (Author/WD)
