Peer reviewedThiel, Robert P.; George, Kenneth D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Found that the following variables significantly affected the students' performance of a task involving science skills: type of rule and number of attributes used in the prediction task, and whether the student was given a verbal description of the rule to be used. (MLH)

Methods of Smoothing Double-Entry Expectancy Tables Applied to the Prediction of Success in College.
Peer reviewedKolen, Michael J.; Whitney, Douglas R. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1978
Nine methods of smoothing double-entry expectancy tables (tables that relate two predictor variables to probability of attaining success on a criterion) were compared using data for entering students at 85 colleges and universities. The smoothed tables were more accurate than those based on observed relative frequencies. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: College Entrance Examinations, Expectancy Tables, Grade Prediction, High Schools
Peer reviewedBranscomb, Lewis M. – Science, 1979
A 100-year scenario of the future of information technology. To achieve inexpensive, high-speed, and small computers, new techniques are likely to replace silicon technology. The ultimate computer might be biological and patterned on DNA. Future computers will require information rather than store it. Light wave communication will broaden…

Peer reviewedKolata, Gina Bari – Educational Horizons, 1978
Studies are summarized on the efficacy of two common treatments for hyperactivity: the Feingold diet and stimulant drugs. Peer reviewedRubin, Rosalyn A.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1978
A study involving 732 preschoolers was conducted to determine the extent to which children identified on preschool readiness test as "high risk" for development of learning disabilities demonstrate low achievement in basic school skills by the time they have completed several years of elementary school. (SBH)

Peer reviewedHaynes, Suzanne G.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1978
Describes an epidemiological study of the patterns and correlates of survival after early (age 62 to 64) and normal retirement (age 65). Death rates were significantly elevated during the first, fourth, and fifth years after early retirement. Pre-retirement health status was the only significant predictor of survival after early retirement.…
