Many errors in the selection of college students are inversely related to the validity of the predictors employed. The generally weak validity with which grade point average (GPA) has been predicted may be a criterion problem rather than a predictor problem. GPA prediction is inferior to single-class grade prediction. (BJG)

Comparative validity data for the Career Ability Placement Survey and the General Aptitude Test Battery relative to predicting course marks are presented for a sample of ninth grade students. The pattern of correlations between school grades and conceptually similar tests in the two measures was highly similar. (Author/JKS)

Batlis, Nick C. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
A job involvement measure was altered to reflect academic involvement and was employed as a predictor of academic performance. Contrary to the findings of prior industrial research, involvement was found to be correlated neither with age nor with course satisfaction; however, it did prove an efficacious predictor of course grade. College freshman English teachers and high school sophomore English teachers reported the variables they use in grading; their responses were factor analyzed. Individual items within the Knower Speech Experience Inventory were studied to discover what specific communication-related experiences distinguish effective from poor public speakers in a basic college level speech communication course. Results showed that 30 of the 48 items successfully discriminated among groups of speakers. (JF)
