The "Olympic Heritage" year in California provides an excellent opportunity to motivate students to examine their heritage from ancient Greece and to advance cross-curricular coordination. The very successful 1981-82 "Shakespeare Year" program can be used as a model. A proposed Olympic project is described. (RM)

Explores the theoretical foundations of the new strategies for reducing crime known as community crime prevention. The limitations of these strategies, which are based on changing potential victims' behavior, are described. Explores the effects of school budget cuts on music education in Oak Grove, California. When most public school music classes were eliminated, community members and parents organized a nonprofit association to teach music at cost. Teachers criticized themselves for failing to communicate the value of music education to school administrators. (AM)

The controversy over the decentralization of schools focuses essentially on the issue of community control. This article explores the current status of decentralization and evaluates its effectiveness as a vehicle for community influence and educational reform. (Author/WD)
