Educating the Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) about the Use of Evidence-Based Practice Techniques
Adrian D. Williams
ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, Regis College
In an environment such as Intensive Care unit (ICU), evidence-based practice is essential to provide adequate care to the patient and their family members (Duncombe, 2018). Unfortunately, a lack of evidence-based practice in the hospital setting exists for various reasons (Duncombe, 2018). The purpose of this scholarly project was to research how the application of evidence-based practice by critical care nursing staff helps to promote the delivery of the most up to date and quality care. This study took place at an urban hospital in the Midwest region of the United States. It included 30 participants who received an educational pamphlet designed by the primary investigator. The Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (Upton & Upton, 2006) was utilized as a Pre Assessment and Post Assessment test in order to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational pamphlet that provides knowledge on and use of evidence-based practice. Results of the project concluded that the mean score of the Pre EBPQ Assessment (136.47) was significantly lower than the mean of Post EBPQ Assessment (152.23). Eta squared for the total evidence-based practice questionnaire = 0.81 indicating a large effect size. This study found that providing ICU nurses with education on how to incorporate evidence-based practice into their daily practice, nurses gained a better understanding, attitude and use of evidence-based practice. Nursing is a continuously learning and evolving field, nurses should strive to use evidence-based practice to be up to date on all aspects of care, guidelines and research. As more research is done, hospital leadership and administration should remember to invest in continuing educational opportunities for the nursing staff to ensure they are providing the must up to date quality care.
