Journal of Geography in Higher Education, v49 n3 p422-440 2025
Cities are growing in complexity, population, spatial extent, and cultural diversity, in an era of multiple environmental crises. Tertiary education offers opportunities to strengthen inter-organizational networks and capabilities, connecting universities and local communities to respond to such crises. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the role and potential of community-based learning CBL approaches to advance urban and community resilience. The key questions explored are: (1) What is the state of multidisciplinary literature on urban and community resilience to support CBL practices in partnership with communities? (2) Which geographical methods and approaches are emerging and facilitating interdisciplinary research in urban and resilience research? First, this article analyzes key alignments and divergences, and geographical contributions emerging in urban and community resilience literature. Then, it examines student research developed and carried out in a Geography course titled Resilient Cities, over six years. This course adopted a CBL approach aimed at different aspects of urban resilience, in Christchurch, New Zealand. The analyses outline key trends and methodological approaches emerging in student research in partnership with community actors.
