Peer reviewedButzow, John W.; Schlenker, Richard M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Described is a study which relates Piaget's theory of cognitive development to Lowenfeld's types of perceptual aptitude (i.e., visual v haptic orientation). General interpretations of questionnaire results from university students (N=312) are made that postulate a relationship linking incidence of perceptual and logical ability. (CS)

Problems faced by a college dean in his first year are described and ways of finding solutions discussed. (JD)

Peer reviewedRedfield, Joel; Stone, Arthur – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1979
Assessed whether change alone provides adequate representation of the qualities of life events and if individuals differ systematically in their perceptions of events. Results indicate that important characteristics of events vary widely among individuals and that future assessment of properties of life stress are both multidimensional and…

Peer reviewedLamberts, Frances – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1981
The perceptual-linguistic stimulus distinction for auditory stimuli was examined with 35 trainable and severely retarded (age 8 to 20) and 31 nonretarded (age 3 to 5) students. Retarded and nonretarded students performed similarly on auditory-perceptual stimuli. Nonretarded students performed significantly better than did retarded students on…

Peer reviewedCotten-Huston, Annie L. – Journal of Drug Education, 1982
Focused on recorded tapes and sex-role interaction of 12 sessions on drug abuse. Subjects were 247 seventh-grade males and females. Communicators (males and females) made two presentations with roles rotated according to ex-addict/learned specialist. Results indicated female and male students were influenced most by female specialist…

Kerr, Barbara A. – Vocational Guidance Quarterly, 1982
Studied the effects of three different career counseling environments on client perceptions of the environment and client behavior. Results indicated that the career resource center is perceived more positively and is associated with a higher proportion of clients returning for career exploration than a professional office or interview room. (RC)
Descriptors: Attitudes, Career Centers, Career Counseling, Career Exploration
Peer reviewedKeith, Pat M. – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1981
Examined quantification of time remaining and perceived distance from death among 568 older men and women. A substantial proportion (49 percent) didn't quantify the remaining portion of life, and age did not prompt specification of time remaining. Demographic characteristics predicted perceived distance from death better than life changes or sex.…

Peer reviewedJohnson, Kerry A.; White, Marilyn Domas – RQ, 1982
Reports on research to determine the cognitive style of reference librarians on the field dependence/field independence dimension and to relate cognitive style to personal and professional variables such as role perception, library affiliation, and undergraduate major. Included are two figures, one data table, and a reference list. (Author/JL)

Peer reviewedMorris, G. Barry – Canadian Journal of Education, 1982
Historically, educational theory has been closely related to major movements in the socio-political-economic structure. It is proposed that education in the future will need to consider the concepts of change, conscious awareness and cooperation in the context of a concern for survival of humanity. (Author)

Peer reviewedGoldstein, E. Bruce; Fink, Susan I. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
Four experiments show that observers can selectively attend to one of two stationary superimposed pictures. Selective recognition occurred with large displays in which observers were free to make eye movements during a 3-sec exposure and with small displays in which observers were instructed to fixate steadily on a point. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Experimental Groups, Eye Fixations, Eye Movements
Peer reviewedCarlton, Les G. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
The time needed to process visual feedback information for the control of aimed movements was investigated in two experiments. Examination of movement patterns indicated that the average time between presentation of visual error information and initiation of a movement correction was 135 msec, which is shorter than previous estimates. (Author/RD)

Peer reviewedAnd Others; Baird, John C. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1979
This experiment tested the ability of people to recall the locations of buildings in a familiar campus setting. Ten graduate students represented the relative locations of buildings by pairwise distance judgments and by direct mapping of locations on a Tektronix cathode ray terminal. Both methods led to accurate judgments. (Author/CTM)

Peer reviewedBaird, John C.; Merrill, Amanda A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1979
This experiment investigated preferences for the location of facilities in an ideal town. Ten graduate students represented the relative locations of facilities (home, school, factory) by two methods: (1) pairwise ideal distances on a 100-point scale and (2) direct planning of locations on a Tektronix cathode ray screen.
