John P. Morgan; Elizabeth E. Torres; Richard Averill; Alex M. Brody – Journal of Chemical Education, 2023
The benzoin condensation of benzaldehyde is a staple of the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory, introducing the current topic of nucleophilic carbene organocatalysis. Our procedure makes notable improvements to current practice, including the elimination of solvent waste and an "18-fold reduction of reaction time." We have…

Gayle Geschwind; Micol Alemani; Michael F. J. Fox; P. S. W. M. Logman; Eugenio Tufino; H. J. Lewandowski – Physical Review Physics Education Research, 2024
Physics education research (PER) is a global endeavor, with a wealth of work performed at a variety of institutions worldwide. However, results from research into undergraduate physics laboratory courses are often difficult to compare due to the broad variations in courses. We report here how we developed and validated a survey to classify these…

Maureen E. Dunbar; Jacqueline J. Shade – HAPS Educator, 2024
Teaching introductory anatomy and physiology (A&P) requires a careful balance of conveying core content while at the same time fostering a deep interest in the subject matter. This is especially true in the laboratory where students are expected to not only master experimental procedures but also connect what they learn in the laboratory to…

Early research experiences play an important role in shaping students' academic and professional development and future career path. While many colleges and universities offer undergraduate students the chance to engage in research, a significant number of high school students face limited or no access to such opportunities. Initiatives such as…

Kovacevic, Tanja; Skinner, Austin; Fisk, John D.; Fishback, Vanessa; Reed, Scott M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2020
The complete structural analysis and resynthesis of an unknown compound, selected from a library of dipeptides, provided a framework for a course that built from expository experiments toward a guided-inquiry approach. We used this semester-long lab as a replacement for conventional second semester organic chemistry laboratory and successfully…

Sakon, Takuo; Inoguchi, Kaname – Physics Education, 2020
In this article, we examine the rotation angle dependence of a hand-made fan-type variable capacitor for use in physics experiments in university classes. We made two circular bakelite plates, and the two terminal plates of the capacitor were 90° fan-type copper disks. The capacitance varied linearly with the rotation angle. The standard deviation…

Susman, Katarina; Rihtaršic, David – Physics Education, 2022
The paper introduces an electronic device named 'Blinker', which is suitable for laboratory work on topics related to electric current and resistance, as it allows the visualization of electric current. The Blinker is well suited for all levels of education if the activities are carefully selected. However, despite other devices used for measuring…

Williams, Hollis – Physics Education, 2022
We outline the basic theory behind white light interferometry and the workings of a typical light interferometer microscope. We study WLI images obtained for rough and smooth chrome steel spheres to illustrate the principle that curved rough surfaces can be imaged with such a device as long as the surface roughness is kept within certain limits.

Rybin, V.; Semynin, M.; Rudyi, S.; Rozhdestvensky, Yu – Physics Education, 2022
We present a simple and affordable method for making a surface electrodynamic trap for microparticles. The principles of electrodynamic trapping of charged particles are discussed and step-by-step instructions on how to make a surface trap are given. In addition to the electrodynamic trap implementation and operation process, options for its…

Mayta, Martín L.; Dotto, Marcela; Orellano, Elena G.; Krapp, Adriana R. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2022
The CRISPR/Cas9 system is widely used for editing genes in various organisms and is a very useful tool due to its versatility, simplicity, and efficiency. To teach its principles to post-graduate students we designed a laboratory activity to obtain and analyze PDS3 mutants in "Arabidopsis thaliana" plants consisting of: 1) Design of…

Kyle Weaver; Jennifer A. Reeves; Dominik Konkolewicz – Journal of Chemical Education, 2022
Organic chemistry students often struggle with reaction mechanisms, particularly in how they are proposed and justified. In this activity targeting second year organic undergraduates, students used infrared spectroscopy (IR) to track the reaction progress of two distinct aldol reactions and used polarimetry to analyze the stereoselectivity of…
